Cummins hiccup/hesitation during acceleration??

I think I remember reading something about rev limiters on the fuel system with cummins power but want to make sure this is whats going on. I have a 2000 Ram 2500 with about 66K miles on it now. I bought it last Nov with 59K. I have noticed since I bought it that while accelerating in pretty much all gears that once I hit about 2400 RPMs the cummins hesitates and bucks a bit as though fueling sensors are cutting fuel flow. Is this whats going on??? I know red line is around 3500 R's on the tach but mine seems to cut out at 2400 when I'm going through the gears say when merging on the interstate or pulling away from stop lights. I have the 6-speed tranny. I have not had a chance to have fuel pressure checked yet(bad boy RJ) but intend on doing so this week. Also, should I try running fuel system cleaner through on occassion?? thanks for any and all advice guys. Help if you can.. RJ in Montana....

Sounds like it is your lifter pump. Get it checked and if found bad, don't bother with dealer. Put a Holley Black on it with the kit from Rod.

I would check those lift pump pressures, too!

Also, how long since changing your fuel filter?

I run additive in my fuel...mostly in the winter, tho...less in the summer.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll get the pressure checked here in the next couple of days.. Fuel filter was changed about 5000 miles ago. I plan to change every other oil change. Will get changed again in about 2000 miles. Is this frequent enough?? Thanks for the help.. RJ in Montana..

I do mine every 15,000 miles. Every 7000 is plenty good.

I also highly recommend the Holley Black Kit from Rod.

If it is indeed your lift pump, I believe your warranty will cover it. If you are thinking about upgrading your fuel system, forget the Holley and check into the PE4200. I think some members are testing them in the stock lift pump location instead of back by the tank. Let us know what you find out ;D

Why do you say ditch the Holley? Rod's got a lot of hours of testing behind this.

When I used to hotrod small block Chevy's, I had nothing but problems with Holley pumps.
Never cared for Holley anything really. Just an opinion.....

Problem Solved, you guys nailed it....

Thanks for the advice guys, I took the truck in yesterday and sure enough it was the lift pump. Had never had a start problem, only hesitations and occasional hiccups while accelerating. Once they relieved the pressure while testing it, trouble signs really showed. The shop that trouble shot it had a heck of a time getting it started just to get it out the door. I left it running until I got it out to the local Dodge dealer! Dealership also tested it this morning and supported the private shops findings and Dodge payed for a new pump and install. I think it tested at 4-5 lbs idle and 8-9 with load. Thanks again for all your help. RJ in Montana....
