Crankshaft sensor

2000 Turbo Diesel was running just fine and starting fine also. Went out the other morning to start it and it wouldn't start on the first turn of the key, which it normally does. After several attempts it started, but was very sluggish for awhile and then seemed to run just fine.
Put the code reader on it and it threw a crankshaft sensor malfunction. Does this mean that I need a new crankshaft sensor, or is it possible that there is another problem? Also, where is the crankshaft sensor, my book does not show where it is for the diesel. Thanks, Steve

Look right on top of the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. Its a magnet with a couple wires in a loom. That is where I would start. If that is bad, your engine tach, speedometer and alternator (all or some) will not work properly.

I replaced the crakshaft sensor a few days ago and it cured the check engine light on my truck. I wasn't having starting problems yet but I fixed it before it became a problem. One of my codes was a 336. Is that what you got? Pretty easy fix. Be sure not to brake the dipstick tube off like I did though!

Wrong, that is for a 12 Valve Engine.

For a 24 Valve, the Crank Position Sensor is located behind the starter (along the block). Basically remove your started and you will see the 90 degree sensor (sensor part is in the block, plug in curves upwards to form a 90). Sometimes they can be a real pain to remove because they seize to the block. Be careful not to push it into the block!!! Once replaced, re-install the starter and away you go.

His truck is a 2000 model so it would be behind the starter as Dinner has indicated and not up front.

And not to confuse the situation but sometime in 2000 or early 2001 they quit using the crank sensor and that feed comes from the cam position sensor. So if you have one it is as stated previously by the starter. If it isnt there you dont have one it is using the cam sensor for that input. Also if it does have one when you take it out make sure and look at the end of it. If it has a groove worn into it or marred up the tone ring may be loose.
