crankcase breather bottle

I have searched the forum but I still am unable to find my crankcase breather bottle. I have a Dodge 2001 with the 5.9 Cummins. I looked in the owners manual and it even suggests draining it during lube jobs but doesn't show where it is much less what it looks like, I've looked in shop manuals but again, where is it and what does it look like. I have my oil changed on a regular basis but have no idea if they are draining it or not. I'm having a oil bath problem on the undercarraige they attribute it to rear main seal, oil pan or ? And I can't pinpoint the source. I have been dirty hands free far too long. I used to rebuild engines, change transmissions, do brakes, etc. I got lazy and now have everything done for me. Now that I'm retired I can't afford to get away with that. Any help, and especially a photo would be greatly appreciated.

It's bolted to the front of your timing cover. You should see it when looking between the fan and the timing cover. Lower drivers side of the timing cover.

The "bottle" is "hanging" off of this? To remove the bottle and dump the suposed contents I just pull down on it or twist it or? I know these are dumb questions but I have never seen any application like this before. Thanks.

I removed mine long ago I believe it is bolted on but you should consider putting a longer hose on it run in down the frame rail past the motor. many options out there. this basically takes the oil and vapors and moves it make away from the fan, radiator and front cover. this set up really does a ugly mess on the truck and radiator which can contribute to higher temps being the fins are plugged. some people have put socks over the extended hose to catch the oil drips but still allow it to breath. some dont some trucks have do alot of heavy towing and driving big hills going down have reported problems with losing oil (quarts). do a search on this you will get a ton of threads and different ideas to help this.

It should have one bolt in the bottom of it, remove that and it just pulls off. When I bought my truck, the previous owner didn't put that bolt back in, and the puke bottle started rubbing on my belt, eventually wearing a hole in it, leaving all of the oil to just run down the front cover.... Needless to say, I removed the bottle, and cut the hose right at the top bend, and ran PVC over to the side of the motor and down to the frame. its a lot cleaner, and kinda looks cool too, like a big rig puffing a little smoke in the winter time

Search "puke bottle" and see what all comes up, no pun intended.

That's slang for crankcase breather bottle 'round here.

Here is an example; click on breather tank-

This is way more complicated than what I and most have done. In my opinion the shorter and least amount of restriction for the vapors to escape the better. Also some of the high hp guys around here have routed it to escape through the exhaust. That is what alot of racers do with high rev engines (gasers) to help relieve back pressures on the piston down stroke, but I don't think it really maters in our case. Yet it wouldn't hurt, and you wouldn't have to worry about oil drips or draining a container.

dealer but I would recomend just adding some oil hose and run it down 14" longer and forget the bottle it just make your radiator a mess

These puke bottles are a joke. They usually leak oil , which ends up in your rediatoer & coating the motor.
I think the path of least resistance is to get a hose, same diameter, maybe 6' I ran mine toward the drivers side door and tiewrapped it to where it dumps & breathes in the wheellwell, to a supporting braket. The oil, what little there may be, ends up on the ground. I used tiewraps to secure the hose along the way.

You might want to look at your vacuum pump for that "oil bath".

Best mod I did to my truck was to get rid of that stupid puke bottle.

1/2" pvc and a few 90 degree elbows and I have a breather tube that drops out between my frame rail and starter.

My radiator was almost completely plugged up with nasty oil gunk...
