Costal Oil
Costal Oil
was looking at this stuff at autozone and wondered if anyone here knows if its any good or not. It meets cummins specification (cant remember the number) and its still the old CI-4 stuff, so I kinda liked the sounds of that. I know after reading that article in the last tdr issue where they tested what was in a bunch of the common name brand oils, the new CJ-4 stuff didn't seem like the greatest thing.
well, my buddy just changed oil in a ford f-650 with the cat c-7, and thats what he used. the costal stuff looked real clean....didn't have a dark tint to it like some oils. We use castrol at work, and that stuff is kinda dark colored. I can't imagine autozone would sell recycled oil though.
Hard to say, took a buds 7.3 power stroke out to NY to pickup something he bought on E bay. Turned out the high pressure O-ring on the bottom of the turbo decided to leak. We went through a total of 12 gallons of oil getting out there and back. We stopped at Autozone in Columbus Ohio and picked up 3 cases of Coastal 15W40 and drove on. Never had any problems with it. Currently the engine is tore apart in my shop and the bearings looked pretty good for 150k on the engine, and he works it HARD. I would say why not??..
Should be no problems with recycled oil, except for what it was recycled from - if it is pure Diesel-rated oil, formulated for very hi-pressures and very hi-temperatures, then I might have no reservations in using it.
If various-rated motor oils are all poured into one tank for the recycling process - what about when someone tops off a partly-filled container of motor oil with auto-trans fluid or similar? - I might consider it for a gasser (patooie!), or a lawnmower\weedeater, etc, but not Diesel service.
Nor for Harley service........
Any petro-chem engineers out there, with professional input?

Long is it has the SAE ratings on the can telling you that it is specifically for that application, like most other oils I can think of, it'll work fine. No SAE ratings (or whatever you call them) then don't use it. I buy which ever brand of 1 gallon jugs of 15W-40 is on sale. Last time that was Shell's Rotella brand, time before that was Valvoline. Brand makes no difference long as the ratings say it's the oil for that motor. Changing the oil is more important than with which specific brand. ANY 15W-40 oil commonly available at your local auto parts store in 1 gallon jugs will work fine....
