I do the ON/OFF trick once in awhile to check and see if I got any codes on mine. If I do then I figure out the cause of the codes and erase them by pulling the fuse under the hood... I forgot which one by there are two fuses the take care of the ECM & PCM... That way I don't lose my radio presets, clock, and Thermometer Guage Settings.

Turn the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then on.

Watch the odometer window.

Codes will flash in there, preceded and followed by P-ECU, P-PCU, and P-Done.

I carry an OBDII code reader in the glove box, check it now and then or when I think something might be wrong. Comes in handy.

Yes, scan tool will show you the codes, maybe more.

For some reason, the key on/off trick doesn't always show all the codes.
Same thing with an off the shelf scan tool.

Only way to make sure you have all the codes is the Dealer's DRB Scan Tool.

There are so many computer modules in our trucks, they don't always communicate with each other.
ECM (Engine Control Module) PCM (Primary Control Module), Tranny Control Module, Body Control Module, Anti lock brake module, Dash Cluster Module, etc etc etc.

Correct.

1999 was skipped for some reason.

Pre 1999 the key on/off trick gave you flashes of the check engine light that you counted then looked up.

Post 1999 you get the readout in the odometer.

1999 your only option is a code reader.

Anyone know where I can get a list of the codes. I am having a problem with my tranny. But put it on the scanner at the parts store and it revealed nothing. The on/off trick revealed nothing as well. Called a tranny shop in Iowa that I found on the board here (Goerend Brothers Transmittion). Spoke with David he was extremely helpful. He had me unplug one of the wires going to the tranny. It was a round plug and had 8 wires going to it. He then had me do the on/off trick. Then codes showed up. He was suspicious of the computer not sending codes when it should. Now the codes it sends are PCU - P 0753, P 0713, P 1763 and ECU P 1693. I don't know how to reset them. The problem is that my tranny is going into "limp mode" after I take off the 1st time and stays in 3rd gear unless I manually pull it down into first and then back to drive. He seems to think that it is the Governor Pressure Sensor (Transducer) or the Gov. Press. Solonoid. What say the masses?

We have a pretty good list of the codes here.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Here's another site I look to that has some that are missing from the tech facts.

http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/96-01.shtml

Also this one has some that both the above are missing:

http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/99-01trk.shtml

P0753 Trans 3–4 Shift Sol/Trans Relay Circuits

P0713 Trans Temp Sensor Voltage Too High

P1763 Governor Pressure Sensor Voltage Too High

And the ever popular "companion code" P1693 set in either the ECM or PCM saying that the other of the two has a code in it.

Sounds like Dave hit it on the head.

Oh, just noticed that this is your first post,
Welcome to the board.

For future questions, it would help if you had your signature filled out with pertinent vehicle data, Year, 12 or 24 valve, any additions you've made, etc.
Signature can be accesses from the "user cp" button up above, then profile.

You want to know the codes? Yes, a scan tool is a must.

Scan, read, clear. If the lights come on scan for the problem. The more money you spend on the tool the more it can do and or tell you. Such as how well it pin points the problem. Also just because a lights not on doesnt mean everything is OK. Scan an check for code periodically.
Check out Autozone for a fairly cheap scan tool. Another good thing about these little jewels is they work on any vehicle that matches its plug.
