Check Guages
Good afternoon.
On my way home, the check guages light came on. I suspect a loose contact somewhere as this occured while driving over a bumby rooad.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could steer me in the right direction.

I found the problem, a broken belt. Now I have to find the new belt which I bought 2 years ago as a spare when I went off the "Rock" for a trip with the trailer to PEI. This could be a massive undertaking!!!!
If you are talking the serpentine belt, they go on rather easily.
You'll need a 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar. The schematic for the routing of the belt should be on a sticker in front of the radiator on the crossmember. Just weave the belt over the fan and then get it around all the pulleys. When you have it almost on untension the idler pulley with the breaker bar and carefully slip the belt under the pulley into place, keeping your fingers out of harm's way.
God Luck!

It was in fact the serpentine belt.
The cause of the broken belt was that seven of the eight bolts holding the pulley in place at the fan were missing. The eighth bolt was partially off. This natuarally caused the belt to wobble, heat up and finally break.
The good news is that I found the replacement belt. I have to phone around tomorrow for 8 new bolts.
This should be something for everyone to check.

Just saw this thread today. Same thing happened to me last night. The pulley almost fell off, only one bolt left holding it. The holes are wallered out pretty bad.
Did you have to replace your pulley, or did you just put in new bolts?

Thanks!
I hope none of the bolts broke off. If not then I will just replace the missing ones and check them often. I have just about 230k on it now.
Just about a week ago I changed out the water pump, radiator, and alternator. Was hoping that would be it for a while LOL. Oh well. Better than a new truck note hehehehehe.

Lots of work on these vehicles if one wants to keep them going.
Last summer, I replaced both fenders and the bottom portions of the doors. This summer I will be replacing the steering box, steering shaft and tailgate. Also I have a diesel leak which I have to track down (suspect the return line).
