Check engine light
Was driving through Calgary the other night and it was quite cold (-25) I was supposed to be meeting friends at the Husky and I had just driveen about 700 miles. I knew I was getting low on fuel.... the light was on and so forth. But I thought I could make it to the Husky and fill up then.
A couple blocks from the place Truck just seems to shut down..
as if someone shut it off or you ran out of fuel. and the check engine light comes on.
So I start pulling over thinking "good work moron you ran your truck out of fuel, won't that be fun to get running again in the freezing cold and won't that be great for your VP etc." so I'm coasting to a stop in the right lane and trucks seems to be idling fine so I give her a little pedal and we seem to be back in action. I make it to the Husky just fine. Fill it up, go have dinner and so forth. Leave, truck runs fine, C.E light still on. But after a few starts and so forth the next day the light goes out all on it's own and everything seems normal and happy. Any idea what this might be???

You need a OBDII Code Reader for your truck. Later years and many older years could use the ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON ignition switch trick, but for a short time, Dodge went away from that. Many tool/parts warehouses sell them, some very cheap. If you want one that has the ability to change some programming for more power, SuperChips has a tuning computer that can also retrieve and reset codes. Check out DPPI or another vendor for more details.
tool,
I beleive codes are stored and don't necessarily light up the MIL.
A scan tool is the answer. Crappy Tire has a bone simple reader for around $250.
There are others that will log sensor inputs in real time and allow you to reset codes/MIL but they start to get a bit pricey.

I have the same problem with the light/engine shutting down. Goes away when you change gears (5 speed). Checked the code.....came up with either glow plugs or throttle position sensor. Dodge dealer told me they never sold a glow plug so it might be the sensor. I haven't changed it yet, kind of expensive.....learned to live with it for now, it only does it every now and then

We have this one....and works very well for the price. CE light will go out i think after 10-20 key cycles if no other probs are noted. BUT it will store a code. The on-off key trick only with with trucks with a digital Odometer...and not all i have tired worked! haha.....
