Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
I’m driving along 70-72 mph and my check engine light came on. I pulled off the road and did the on off thing and all the code said was CHKENG. I looked under the hood didn’t see anything so I took off down the road again. By the overhead I was still averaging 18.8 mpg. I drove another 100 miles and my fuel light came on, I had about 550 miles on this tank. I went to the bank and took out a loan and filled it up, I was really nervous carrying so much money with me. Anyway when I started it up after filling it up the check engine light went out. What happened?
This is just something to think about,,,,,,, and I'm not sure if it pertains to our CTDs, but quite a few of the fuel injected gassers will set off the "check engine light" if the fuel cap is not tight on the tank. I thought I had read it mentioned as a possability concerning the Cummins also. Can't swear to it,,,,, but maybe someone else will chime in.
I know what ya mean about taking out a loan for a fill-up!
It just went down to $2.06.9 here a couple of days ago.

My check engine light came on again. This time the truck stopped. The engine would idle but nothing would happen if I stepped on the gas. The enging would just idle then all of a sudden it would take off again. It did this a half dozen times then started running right again. This time the code was P PCU. Anybody?

The key on/off/on/off/on trick doesn't always get all the codes.
If the check engine light is on, there is definately a code there that you aren't seeing.
P PCU just means it's checking the PCM
P ECU means it's checking the ECM.
P Done means it's done.

sounds like the apps[throttle position sensor] is failing.
you need to cycle the key 3 times and leave it on on the third time. you should get codes. what you are showing is not a valid code. it takes a few seconds before it flashes one out. with the check engine light on a code should be stored. you may have to get it scanned.

Finally went to Cummins Southplains and spent $336 for a new APPS assembly. The problem has not returned.
Do a search here and you can find the APPS reset procedure.

You might try cleaning up the connectors and trying it.
Sorry, I really don't know where the connectors are though.

Ended up taking the truck in to the dealer. I had 35,647 miles on it but it was two months out of warranty, so the bottom line was $655.45 to replace the APPS sensor. $463 for the sensor and $131 labor.
I don't know how much time they charged to get to $131, but I ain't no mechanic, and I changed mine myself in less then 45 min.
Check around and find you a good repair shop that will do that kind if stuff a lot cheaper. Also, find a Cummins dealer and you will pay 1/2 to 1/3 less for parts.
I don't care if the person is a millionaire, I hate to see anyone get ripped by dealerships.

nitrosn is right, the apps will continue to throttle back your engine to idle speed, and the engine will snap back after you let off the pedal and snap it back down, then you engine will come back alive. But, one day it will completely die and will not recover. My dealership sold my tps/apps for $300.00 and it is a breeze to put on. As far as the key thing, it WILL NOT show you codes on the '98's and 99's, I'm not sure about your '01.
