Changing Rear Main Oil Seal Question

Is it possible on these diesels to change the rear main oil seal without pulling the engine?

either pull the engine, or pull the trans, trans is easier, good time to do it if you are replacing the clutch and what not.

I'm pulling the trany. My question is can it be replaced without pulling the engine? I don't know if this is a split seal or a pressed in seal. If it is just pressed in I can replace it when I pull the flywheel. Anybody done this onm a 2001.5?

Ya you have to remove the adapter if I remember right, and the pull the rear main and replace, I did this when I did my clutch.

AS soon as you get the flywheel off you can see the seal. pop it out and install the new one with the crankshaft surface clean and DRY. the new seal should come with a plastic guide in the center to get it over the crank and a metal ring to tap the seal into the housing the right depth.

My rear seal kit came with the gasket for the trans adapter, no need to take the adapter out though. 2 drywall screws into the metal of the seal and a prybar on either side popped it right out.

Thank you very much for the information. I'll get a seal before I pull the trany. You guys are great!

On mine it was a real pain to get the seal out. It was REALLY stubborn. Worse than any I've ever encountered. Even with the housing out it gave me trouble. Most folks don't have much trouble with it though.

Some places put them in with an adhesive or something like Bearing Mount. That stuff expands when it cures making the fit really tight. That can make it tough.
