Changed fuel filter now problems

Hey guys
So i changed my fuel filter on saturday and having never done it before i just pulled the old one switched the o rings out and put the new one on, when i started it up it ran like hell and smoked like a tire fire, after some time it ran fine on sunday it ran fine then this morning it smoked real bad again and i had no throttle respone like the turbo wouldnt kick infinally after driving about 30mph for about 3 miles it "fixed" itself, I am thinking i did something wrong when i changed the filter. anyone have an idea what i screwed up here
i hope its not a LP or IP issue
thanks

i just did mine yesterday...had a nice stumble and engine die after priming the pump..(key crank) after that i primed the system one more time and cranked the key for about 10 sec and it fired right up....drove it 40 miles today and not a problem at all....

1. do you have guages??? what PSI are you seeing
2. did you use the o-rings that came with the new filter or just use the old ones.
3. did you close the drain all the way..(reason i ask is because after i did my first change many moons ago..i didnt close it all the way and had a slow trickle out causing a major drop in FP)... as in do you see any leaks around the filter area on idle.
4. did you plug the sensor back in
5. lastly you may want to crack an injector line, maybe an air lock.

NCA

ps..do you have the stock LP still.....i have heard many cases of the LP dieing after a fuel filter change. usually on a vehicle that has a few miles on it (ie..80k plus) if i remember correctly it has to do with the weak stock LP's to begin with and then the changing of FF and need to prime the system..after repeated FF changes and (basicly dry cranking the LP) they just crap out...my mechanic told me something to this effect...

Did you clean the bowl, put in the new filter and fill the bowl with clean fuel before putting capping it back up? Sounds like you pumped dirt through the system, left over from the old filter. I always drain, clean, replace filter and fill with clean diesel. Never had problems.

good point....last night i didnt fill the bowl with clean diesel...i usually do as well...but i did it at the FD on duty in my down time and we just happened to be out, we usually have a 5 gal spare jug but it was empty...

all previous changes at my house i fill it up about half way with clean diesel (if you fill it too full the filter displaces about half out and you spill it everywhere)

3. did you close the drain all the way..(reason i ask is because after i did my first change many moons ago..i didnt close it all the way and had a slow trickle out causing a major drop in FP)... as in do you see any leaks around the filter area on idle.i only drained a little of the fuel in the canister, i didnt clean it out or drain all fuel
4. did you plug the sensor back in i didnt plug it back in cause i never unpluged any sensor to begin with...
5. lastly you may want to crack an injector line, maybe an air lock. i dont know how to do this,

to my knowledge it is the original LP, something tells me i screwed this one up good, all i did was take the old filter out put the new o ring in and new filter in and start it up...

If I were you I would get the fuel pressure tested, good chance you have a failing LP.

i just ran out for lunch and it did the no power or throttle response thing again for about a minute and a half...
if this is an LP pump i am going to kick myself for not trading this thing in last week

You must hear regular buzzzz for many seconds(very noticiable), at least 10 or even 20 sec.
you can buy a new LP for insurance(bad LP cause long time VP44 failure) from many sources...I bought mine 2weeks ago from Hoesli Diesel...perfect services and fastest shipping. 149bucks or so. they even have the Airtex pump for a little more..
I installed it myself in about 2hours..

it only buzzes for maybe 2-3 seconds, but it starts perfect hardly any cranking of engine prior to firing,

you will hear the buzzing for 10-20 seconds only if you bump the starter. otherwise the fuel pump will only run and prime for 2 seconds when you turn the key on.

most likely got air in your fuel system and might have a weak lift pump. change it out they aren't that expensive.
