Well he bought it a 99. Yes it has a 53 block but I'm not sure how much of an issue that is.

My next question is about the KDP syndrome. Does it affect these engines and how do you fix it???

the 53 block is some what of an issue but the KDP is not really a big deal on the 24v its more of a 12v thing

Thanks for the links.. I think this clears it up..

I think the 53 block theory is like the "soft block" theory I ran into building my 440.

I had a 78 440 block and was worried because it was "soft". Well yea it was soft compared to the 68 high nickel content blocks. The shop who rebuilt it builds 440 to run on natural gas as compressor drive engines. They had done a pile of testing and came up with this: Yea 78 blocks are "soft" but are still harder than any Chebbie block ever built. So it is all relative.

My opinion is the 53 block is an issue but for my buddy he's just running back and forth to work and no real towing at all. I'll pass on the info but I'm not going to get real worried about it.

While the weak point on the 99's was supposedly was the auto tranny I never had any trouble with mine but I did change the fluid often and NEVER towed my TT in OD.

The trouble I had was unable to keep brakes on it! In 98k miles I had 4 brakes jobs (front and rears) and was looking at a 5th one. It still had rear drums.
Just my .02 worth.
