Bumping the Starter?

Have done my research and picked up a FS19598 filter as well (truck is a 98.5).

I’ve seen several posts that refer to “bumping” the starter to purge/burp the fuel system to get all the air out.

What exactly is this?
Actually turning the key all the way over and letting it crank for just a fraction of a second (and then repeating this a few times)?

Just what you said in your last paragraph. It is not even really a crank however, just a bump. LP should run for 20-30secs. Listen for it. 3 times is usually sufficient.

Actually you do not even engage the starter. You turn key to on position (where idiot lights on dash come on). This energizes the lift pump to provide fuel pressure to the injector pump so that the engine has fuel when it starts.

No you have to actually bump the starter to engage the lift pump to prime. Turning the key alone will not prime the pump.

I have never had to "bump" the starter after a fuel filter change. I simply turn the key on and let the LP cycle three times and she always fires right up (even with a weak lift pump).

Bumping the starter is the way to get the 20 sec run time on the lift pump and I would recommend doing that after filter replacement.

This doesn't work on my '02. I have to actually go past the on position to the start position for a split second.

that is the way they operate. the starters solinoid circuit needs a momentary bump then the pump runs its 20 second time out.

In my 02 you have got to bump the starter or the Lp will not run at all. Maybe it is different with other years?

My '99 requires the bump also.

Key on, the lift pump should run for 2-3 seconds then stop.

Continue to "start" position and release before starter motor can turn engine over and the book says the lift pump will run 25 seconds.

Doing that three times should purge all the air out of a new filter.

Don't try to actually start the engine until the 4th click cycle.
