Broken Fan Blade......OUCH!
I searched the the site on this one and came up with nothing. I guess I'm the first?
I had a fan blade break off today. OUCH! Tore up the fan shroud, but left the radiator alone.
The bad news..
... the fan blade came up and hit the hood and put a nice dent and several "waves" due to bracing on the underside being hit. I'll take it to one of them hail dent remover dudes.
Kinda ruined the day, but the dealer had the parts in stock and $150 later I'm "Back on the road again".
BTW fan clutch is a left hand thread.
Note notches in the hex.
It might be a good idea for ya'll to give your fan the once over looking for cracks where the thin blade meets the thick part, above the 3 rivits.
More than likely, this was a freak one time event. About 100,000 miles ago I had the fan clutch fail and the fan came off and hit the bottom of the shroud, obviously stopping very fast. More than likely it was cracked due to that event and finally failed today. IMHO.

Off topic in a way, but I had a cousin nerly get killed by an airborn fan. He was under the hood of a car checking the timing with a timing light when the fan came loose and went straight for his face. Left him blind in one eye, 1/2 of a mouth of artificial teeth, and lots of plastic surgery to get his face back in shape.
Thanks for the heads up Geico...I am going to check mine out tonight. I don't even want to know what a radiator/intercooler/condenser coil/transmission cooler would cost of a fan blade got gashed through it.
Oh, Geico...by the way...truck is running good on the used oil
Just kiddin with ya!

OH the humanity! Used oil in the fuel?
Just think of all those contamiants going into your engine & iron particles attaching to the magnets in your, fuel cooled, pre filtered, and fragile lift pump!
I guess thats why my fan broke, lack of oil in the fuel.

Not a totally uncommon occurance.
I threw a fan blade into the radiator at 32,000 miles. Never thought about it before but guess I was lucky it went in that direction. Did it on shut down??? I parked at a store and as I walked in...salesperson said truck was leaking. There was no trail of coolant leading to parking space...so had to happen at shutdown. Never figured that one out?
Was also lucky it was waranteed! I asked Ser. Mgr at dealership about it...said it's not common but it was not his first fan replacement. Read somewhere - Dodge redesigned the fan blades with ribs (lenghtwise) for extra strength at some point. Not sure when and could not get broken part to see if it had ribs or not.
Anyone else know date of redesign?

Mine broke and the guy I bought it from forgot to tell me about it. Their is a patch in my radiator and my fan was missing a blade.
Infidel has written that he thinks that it is caused from cardboard to help heat the truck. I say no fan is needed, as I have been without one for a year, evan pulling my 31' camper in the summer never above 180. just my .002
