Re:To box it or not??

I just got the comp and so far left the wire unhooked. I like the improvement but always room for more. I may tap the wire when I get brave enough to chance the pump imploding.
Ive got the T/A down doing some head work so I cant be without something to drive right now.

(and DANG IT, Im still a noobie :'( what does it take to get that off me)

Post, post, post......that Noobie will be gone before ya know it. ;D

Same here, bought the Comp (only a few more $$) & left the pump wire loose.
It acts like an EZ, and you don't have to try to sell it to upgrade to a larger box when the time comes.

Yeah I know...... I'm

Tiny

I put an EZ on my truck and there is a mountain I cross daily. It is about 5 miles up not sure of the grade. Before the box 5th gear would loose speed until about 50 and I could cross the top at 50 in 5th. After installing the EZ I could honestly cross the same mountain in 5th at 90. ;D

Re:To box it or not??

What the comp box has settings other then 5??? Since when? Serioulsy though you really have to decide your plans because my mind would change bases on your plans. You see if a little kick IE an EZ 60 Hp increase is enough for you (it won't be you'll want more) then the EZ is fine. If you plan on stepping up down the road (YOU WILL) then I would go a differnet route. Go with TST you see the beautly thing with the TST boxes is this. You start out as you are Oh I only need a little 1 month later your changing to an edge comp box. With the TST all you need to do is buy the next level reasoably priced to step up your not changing the entire box. If you really wanna step the TST box up you can also get one with gauges built in. So when you step up you also get gauges! To me this is the way I would go if modding again. Trust me alot of us have spent more money then needed along our modding paths take every bit of info you can from this site you will save your wallet and make a great bunch of friends while having fun with your truck, it doesn't get any better then this!

Re:To box it or not??

Well fellas, I think you all have talked me into it. I am in the middle of a rebuild on the Nova, but when that is finished, it will be time to box the truck. Has anyone ever bought a used one, are there things to watch for? Or just dump the cash and get a new one? Thanks again.
;D Thanks for all the replies, I will look into getting a box in the near future. Maybe I will get lucky and find someone moving up to a bigger box, and pick one up at a good price. Then provided the VP44 lives, more enhancements. Have to spread the money across 3 vehicles, so it is not easy to budget alot for the truck, yet!! I cannot thank you guys enough, I have learned a tremendous amount in the last few months about the Cummins that I never knew, and I owe it to all the other CTD owners that have shared their knowledge with us. Thanks again.
This IS a great site. I will recommend something different than the others here. I would recommend AGAINST a wire tap box on the early 24V trucks like yours. Yes, it's nice to have the adjustability, but that's what your PEDAL is for!!! ALL CTDs have adjustable power-- right under your right foot.

Timing boxes are NOT harder on the vp44, and provide a lot of low end with NO increase in EGT. CERTAINLY much less than a wire tap box.

I recommend a timing box (van aaken, edge ez, DD TTPM) and MAYBE some 275 injectors. You will be happy with the result, and it will tow ANYTHING you need.

If you "enhance" anything beyond timing box and mild injectors, it is for *play*-- this combo will handle any *work* you can send it.

PLUS, you won't need exhaust, air system, and expensive trans upgrades etc etc... Everything stock should/will work.

You SHOULD still get gauges. Most important is fuel pressure-- you need this even with no upgrades. Then, EGT and boost if you enhance at all. Tranny temp is a must if you tow.

Since EVERYONE seems to want the big boxes, there is a GREAT used market for the tamer boxes as people get power greedy The used box market is great, and if you can save over 20% or so, worthwhile to buy used. Just beware of a few things: the connector plug changed across a few years (i.e. 02 is different) so make sure it will fit YOUR truck. ALSO, some if the early VA boxes did NOT include a boost fooler, which you will want so you can run more boost and drop EGT down.

It boils down to this: you can have all the power you will ever NEED for about $700 (EZ+275s). OR, you can go higher and have to spend BIG $$$ for PLAY power. Which makes more sense to YOU???

PS-- I am looking at DD3s next- then maybe DDUFM and a PDR 40 ;D. This is ONLY place where I am a hypocrite, I promise..

HOHN
