To box it or not??

I have noticed a lot of guys talking about the Edge EZ or the TST Powermax 1. DO they make that much of a difference in the way the truck runs / pulls? I drive the truck 60-75 miles daily, and do not want to lose any stump pulling power, but would like some better throttle response. Any info appreciated.

If you think you have stump pulling power now.... just wait till you leave stockland ;D
I have the Edge Pulse on mine- wouldn't want it to be gone.
But be careful with your VP44- some of the older ones seem to have problems when using boxes. ( If it goes out with the box it seems that it would have gone out a bit later without the box)
I'd suggest that you buy gauges, a nice box (leave wire unhooked) and then upgrade the powertrain.
Then it's time for injectors, airsystem, exhaust, turbo and some more. 8)

AlpineRAM

Re:To box it or not??

Save yourself the heartache later on down the road and buy the Comp. If you go with the EZ now you will end up with the Comp somewhere down the road anyways.

And if you're going to do it...DO IT. Go ahead an hook up the pump wire right off the bat. Personally I don't see much sense in buying an awesome upgrade to only use part of it. That would be like buying a brand new truck and never leaving second gear because you don't want to hurt it...drive it and HAVE FUN ;D

Re:To box it or not??

If you hook up the pump wire on the early trucks be prepared to buy a new vp-44. Stay close to home during your test drive. On the plus side if the pump lives with the wire hooked up it means you lucked out and your pump is good. Mine smoked withing 20 minutes. Good news is that the truck never ran so good as with my new injection pump. Sold my comp box and probably going to go with an eze an some injectors. just my .02

With a 01/HO I would say you are about as safe as you can be. As far as I know the problem is more common with the early trucks/pumps (005 pump). If you have an HO or a newer/updated pump (027) you should be okay. You never know until you try. I'm sure someone smarter than me on here can confirm. I'm just passing on what I've found out in the last week after my pump imploded.

Re:To box it or not??

From what I am to understand, major fueling boxes and older VP44's don't go together that well. Their has been major discussion on that subject including a really informative white paper from TST. However, I would buy the Comp box and leave the wire disconnected for good. Why you ask? You have the ability to adjust the Comp (acting as an EZ from inside the cab. Actually, since you drive a fair amount of miles each day, and I assume at speed, by running the Comp on 1x1 you are actually defueling to a certain point, hence better mileage, better EGT's and way more throttle response than stock when you want it. Or another feature is, that you can turn if off totally when running in town. Then if you want it all, just go to 1x5. Also, by using the boost elbow (assuming you have a manual or a turnbuckle if you have an auto) this will also increase boost thus lowering EGT's. The price difference new between an new EZ and a Comp is only about $100 or so and even if you buy used, Comp not that much more. Worth it in my opinion for the in cab control.

Buy the comp and leave the wire unhooked until you get gauges. I did this for awhile and it was great. I tapped the wire after I installed the gauges and will never go back.
Scooter

Re:To box it or not??

;D Thanks for all the replies, I will look into getting a box in the near future. Maybe I will get lucky and find someone moving up to a bigger box, and pick one up at a good price. Then provided the VP44 lives, more enhancements. Have to spread the money across 3 vehicles, so it is not easy to budget alot for the truck, yet!! I cannot thank you guys enough, I have learned a tremendous amount in the last few months about the Cummins that I never knew, and I owe it to all the other CTD owners that have shared their knowledge with us. Thanks again.

Good point
Buy the comp and leave the wire unhooked until you get gauges.
I didn't realize he didn't have gauges, good point. That is the ONLY way I would consider leaving the pump wire unhooked. I had an EZ for a while and it was ok for a month or so but it just didn't quench my thirst for more power. And as for the VP44, if it's ready to go it's gonna go. Adding a box is only going to show you that you need a new one. I've had my Comp on for about 3k miles and no problems with the VP44 (knock on wood), it didn't take long to suck the life out of the LP though. But that's a given... :

I say do what you feel comfortable with. If you're not comfortable with the pump wire I would still get the Comp because you most likely will later on.
