Blown transfer case.
Blown transfer case.
So I went on my fall trip to the sand dunes. I put my truck in 4 wheel drive to pull into my spot. The next thing I know my kids are yelling at me to shut it off. So I look under my truck and all I see is oil. As I look closer I notice that my transfer case is shattered. Looks like the bolts fell out of the drive line where it hooks to the transfer case. There was one still in so when I put it in 4 wheel drive it came around and hit the cross member. Now I am in need of a transfer case. Where is the best place to get one? I know they are real pricey.
I did the same thing to my transfer case. I replaced the front drive shaft after breaking it over a boulder when i took my truck places it had no business going. I didn't tighten the bolts enough and a week later BLAM, I had a shattered t-case. I called a few transmission shops and got a np241hd housing and swapped everything over with a bearing and seal kit. and have had a great running truck since then.
It wasn't a bad rebuild. The case halves were about $200 and the seal and bearing kit was about $150. Then all you need is about 4 hours if you never done this before. Pretty straight forward with the part swapping. The only real trick is to install and remove both shafts at the same time for the chain. I wouldnt sweat it, if you mess up just take it to a mechanic and watch him slap it together in 15 minutes.
Yea sounds pretty straight forward. I just found out I have the 241 dld. So I guess that is the light duty one. I will keep trying to find a housing. No luck so far. Thanks for you help.
You could check www.car-parts.com. That site will access junk yards all over the US.
I have the DLD. A lot of folks switch to the DHD, but I saw no need to, when mine went. The bolts came out of the front output, allowing the driveshaft to punch a nice hole through the case. I paid $800 for a low mileage, tight transfercase.

I ended up taking it to advanced 4x4 systems in salt lake. They said they could use some of my old parts like the planetary etc. If they can't it will be about 900. The problem with everywhere else is my core is no good. So I would be around 1500. Thanks for all of the help and I will let you know how it turns out.

I understand now about the Transfer Case. There's really I can do except do my speeding on flat ground.
We've rented a house in Pacific Beach. It's about 20 minutes north of Ocean Shores. If the weather is bad we'll go down to Ocean Shores. There's a pizza place we love and the wife likes the casino.
I'd like to meet up with you next summer. Sounds like fun
