How do empty the blow by can on a 2001 truck thanks

 

If your bottle is still intact, lie on your back under the front of the engine and look up just behind the fan. It's literally a black plastic bottle punched with holes and with a lid on it. Just reach up and unscrew the lid, and slide the bottle down from around the tie wrap which holds it to the front cover on the engine. If the tie wrap is too tight, you may have to remove the nut holding the tie-wrap to the cover.

While you're at it, look up and curse all of the oily gunk on the front of your engine. You can remove the bottle, insert a 3/4" to 3/4" barbed coupler and add a length of heater hose so the vent is down and away from the engine. It will keep it much cleaner.

 

Ditto what Commatoze said. Depending on what color your truck is depends how much you notice the mess. My budies 02 is a dark blue and it's not very obvious. But on my white truck it looked like an oil bottle blew up under the hood, all over the inside of the hood. Problem fixed by the heater hose method. Added bonus is you look like one of the big rigs on cool mornigs with a little puff of steam under the truck at stop lights.

how much blow by is normal on a 100k truck

 

I don't know about 100k, mine only has 29k. I park it in the same place every day and it leaves no trace of oil on the ground. The only way I know for sure that it is working is on cool mornings it puffs steam out behind the axel. I do not think you should expect much of any blow by at 100k(not much for these motors) I'm sure somebody with more miles on their truck will chime in on this.

Do what Commatoze said. Just leave it open ended. I used clear hose instead of heater hose. I routed mine down by the front differential and pointed the end down. The gear case has never been happier!!!

 

Used a heater hose on my truck, and it's much cleaner. It can be seen when you walk up to the truck, hanging down I mean.

My blow by is considerable on a hot day when the engine is hot. It looks like a small steam engine just puffing out a little bit of oily steam. I got worried about it, but my truck runs well with only 85k on it. I believe a little puf puf puf of blow by is normal... IMHO

PS - don't know why, but it puff's less after a fresh oil change (thicker oil maybe?). Also, the long tube cures the new oil smell in the cab after an oil change... Pete OUT
