Blew #5 Piston
they havent said what is wrong with the piston yet, they were dissasembling it when i spoke to them last. Egt's were steady in the 900's. yes we were towing about 11000
I melted number six but I was pulling 21000 pounds over Afton Mountain at 72 mph too.
See if it looks like the one in my file below.

IF you were watching your Pyrometer and it is a pre turbo pyro and you were below 1250-1300 NO the injectors alone didnt cause this.
If it was post turbo Pyrometer, the edge or anything else that was added to modify teh power could have caused it because you are adding fuel and buillding heat that you werent getting an accurate reading of.
Either way Dont tell them about the injectors, hope that they dont notice, also did you remove your fueling box? have you tapped the wire? This could get ugly any excuse or modification to the engines fueling system can void the 5 yr 100k mile warranty and rightfully so since we are pushing the fueling system past factory safe levels. If they can find an excuse to get out of it they will. but you may be in trouble already since it is already in thier hands
900 degrees on a hill with 11000 lbs sounds like a post turbo pyrometer reading. I have seen some pretty wild variations in Pyrometer temp readings from pre turbo and post turbo. 3-400 degrees is not and uncommon variation in temp readings. so it could have been 1300 pre turbo and you were only seeing 900-950 and not worrying

What egts were you seeing and for how long?
Any lessons learned that the rest of us should be aware of?
Thanks,
George

we removed the edge ( wire was not tapped) and the spring on the turbo wastegate that ATS put on for me before taking it in. We truly were not working the truck overly hard. Pulling total weight of less than 12000 pounds at a pretty constant 60-65 mph.
temps never seemed to be an issue egt's pretty much always under 1000 more normally about 800. engine temps were a little higher than norm but attributed that to the 100 plus new mexico arizina weather, engine temps were running 200-210.
Spoke to dealer this afternoon and he says chrysler has already ok'ed new engine. bad part is the wait--says could be two weeks to two months and i have a gooseneck trailer out there i need to find a safe storage place for and a way to get it there until i can pick up the truck

No EGT gauge at the time.
If towing heavy, watch the gauges.

Glad to hear that DC is replacing the engine. If you were closer, I'd offer to tow the trailer for ya.

Funny thing though.....the last three CTDs we've replaced: all had mods, none had gauges, aftermarket oil filter equipped, and were pulling heavy. (oh and none of them were warranty either if you were wondering)
