Black Smoke & Poor Mileage
Black Smoke & Poor Mileage
A while back I asked this and someone suggested I clean the IAS. I did that and it make no change.
The truck is slow off the line and makes a lot of smoke at low rpm. Fuel mileage is down from 13 to 10 with the camper on board; from 19 to 16 with the camper off. I have the Edge EZ and it doesn't make much difference in smoke with or without it. Power with the EZ is much better than without, just as before. What can you guys suggest ? Thanks much - getting ready for a big trip in 6 weeks and with the price of diesel............??

Thanks for the reply.
Yah, I did that, and also took it to a local truck shop with a good reputation and had them look it over. Guy scratched his head and said it looked fine to him. He agreed it "sure does smoke a lot." Leaving a traffic light it has almost no power. Takes it ½ way across a 4 lane intersection before it starts to make power in 1st gear. Thing useta be a hot rod.

any codes? might be needen a new map sensor...black smoke is unburnt fuel.your waste gate stuck closed ? clean your map sensor first, its next too the iat....clean or replace the air filter, sounds like u got low boost.
Wastegate would be stuck open for low\no Boost, not closed - check the hose from the wg to the intake manifold - if ok check for ruptured diaphragm - you'll need a hand pump, such as a coolant system\radiator tester - check that the wg arm will move fully open, fully closed
Could also be faulty MAP\Boost sensor, but that should give a DTC

Hook up a temp boost gauge and go for a drive, you gotta have a leak somewhere,, check the Intercooler hose connection down near the driverside battery, I saw one with the intercooler hose blown completely off, and 2 other people before me never noticed as it "looked" connected

You have a boost gauge? The first thing I would check for would be boost leaks.
Sounds like you are not making boost as quickly as you used too, at least to me. It might just be coming up to pressure, but slower than normal. The culprit could be a bad waste gate can be one, bad turbo, a larger boost leak etc....
If you had a small boost leak then it would show up primarily at higher rpm's with the engine loaded more with lower than normal boost pressures, more black smoke and less power. Possibly with a whistling noise.
I am thinking that if you had a bad injector, then possible you would see more white smoke / fuel in the oil etc....
White smoke is often cause by unburned (raw) fuel. Black smoke is a result of incompletely combusted (oxydized) fuel due to a low air/fuel ratio primarily.

Black smoke an no power
I certainly would not rule out any of the things that have been suggested . I am surprized the truck shop did not do a pressure check on the charge air cooler . They un hook the boots or hoses cap one end then they apply reglated pressure I,m not sure about the exact PSI but anyone with the equipment will know . Then they shut off the pressure an check for leaks there is an allowable pressure loss in a given time frame , again if they have the Equip they,ll know what that is . It sure sounds like a boost proublem .
Sorry for the delay in answering. It's been a hectic week at work.
I just now put the code reader on it and it said "PASS - no codes scanned."
Wastegate hose has been pinched closed for 120,000 miles, so I doubt it's that. Idle and pulling under load are smooth and power is great once it gets away from a light. Boost is right up there at 29-31 psi at full power on a hill. Fuel pressure doesn't go below about 8 psi and about 12 at idle.
This smoke and "slowness" is on leaving a light. Power seems fine otherwise, but the low mileage would make me think it's affected at all speeds. Not sure how to check injectors, but I'll ask the guy at the shop what he thinks of that, and get him to look at the hoses and connections again. Thanks again

I had a VA box on my truck (adds timing and boost fooling only) and had the same symptoms...turns out the box was malfunctioning causing the MAP/Turbo Boost Sensor to stop working, I originally had no codes but later I had codes indicating MAP sensor malfunction...I think the box took out the MAP sensor, I have no issues now that I gotten rid of the box and replaced the MAP sensor.
EDIT...I forgot to mention that my truck still performed better with the box plugged in because of boost fooling and the added timing...
