Biodiesel?
Biodiesel?
Wanted to get a feel for how everyone out there felt about runnin' biodiesel in the Cummins? I am here in the cornbelt of IN, and it is available, and lately is almost the same price as regular #2 (still don't understand why I'm payin' $2 a gallon but all the gassers are back down into the $1.50 range). As well, have been doin' some research on making the stuff at home out of waste veggie oil- doesn't look that hard, and I have a science background anyway. My only concern is whether it will damage the VP44 and engine or not. If anyone has any experience with this subject, I would like to hear about it. Thanx-
From everything that I've read homemade biodiesel will only help the vp44 due to the higher lubricity of the fuel.
Really, the only concern in running Bio is with the rubber fuel lines, but I think that is only in older vehicles.
I've been researching homemade bio for a while now. I'm just trying the find the right equipment to get something going.
Everyone that runs bio remarks about keeping an eye on your fuel filter. I guess the stuff really cleans the fuel system.

Higher cetane value and added lubricicity.
I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could feel good about putting the glycerin somewhere.
$3.12 cnd a usg here in the nation's capital.

No reason at all not to use BD with a VP unless it's hard to come by. If diesel prices stay put or increase BD will be cheaper than #2 in the coming years because production is increasing in leaps and bounds. Good idea to either change your fuel filter after a few tanks or keep watch on you FP gauge as BD has a solvent effect and will bust lose any deposits in your tank.

Considering that a common methanol percentage is 20% for the reaction, and you get about a 1:1 ratio of methanol used to glycerine by-product produced, that means you'd end up making about 1 gallon of glycerine by-product for each 5 gallons of biodiesel made. You'd have to have some really dirty hands (and a lot of them) to use up that much hand cleaner.

Donate it to those who can't afford to buy hand cleaner.
Dispose of it.
Point is, I wouldn't let the glycerine stand in your way of making BD.
