Auto Trans shift problems
Auto Trans shift problems
Greetings,
I searched through the tech articles and tried to search all the threads about the automatic issues but didn't see anything that matches my issues exactly.
I have an early (02/99) 1999 2500 and the transmission has issues shifting, at first it would not go at all till it warmed up then once it started to shift it would work just fine. I took this to be the torque converter had lost it's fluid and I would put it into neutral till it warmed up.
It seemed to be taking longer but the weather was colder and it always cleared up and once it started to go it would shift rough till it warmed up completely.
This morning it will go into reverse and first gear without any problems but it won't shift out of first gear at all, reverse is still good and it goes with plenty of power in first but when it tries to shift into second the truck just feels like it's in neutral.
I can manually shift it back into first and it will go just fine.
Thank you in advance for any help as money is real tight right now ( if I need a new tranny it's likely "Egg McMagnum time for me
)

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
I assume the ATF level is O"K and fluid not burnt. Solunds like gev press solenoid is hung open. Replace governor pressure transducer and governor pressure solenoil and sevice tranny and bands as needed. All should be well unless find the magnet in pan looks like chocolate krispy kreem donut.

Quick update,
A friend offered to bring a scan tool over and run a check out of the transmission. there was a code for a speed sensor that had been set a month ago but no other information so we took it on a test run while looking at all the activity on the computer screen and sure enough the output shaft sensor was reading zero RPM even though we were moving.
According to a friend of the friend the transmission will think that the truck is sitting in first and never build pressure to go into second.
This sensor seems like the culprit and a new one is being ordered today I'll let you know if it fixes my issues.
If this fixes it this will be the third bad sensor I have had in this truck, the other two were the MAP and the speed sensor mounted to the top of the rear end pumpkin 1999 must have been a bad era for sensors.
Thanks Guys
Kirk

Final Resolution
Yahooo it was the tail shaft speed sensor
CARQUEST part number 72-3517 about $25
There are two pins coming out of the sensor I checked the new one with an ohm meter prior to install and it read .660 ohms in both directions which likely means it's a coil.
Removal is dead easy just be careful to remove the original Oring prior to installing the new sensor and do not over torque it as the whole thing is made of plastic. It is located on the tail shaft of the transmission driver side it is in with light torque and just a wrench easily removes it, have a bucket to catch the fluid that comes out and have the new sensor ready to screw in with the other hand I only lost a few ounces of oil.
When I took out the old one it read open.
Taking the truck out for a test and it has never shifted this smoothly since I got the truck with 75000 miles it now has 106000 miles. The interesting part is that the symptoms were intermittent and not until the sensor finally quit did it refuse to shift out of first at all for some time it was sluggish to shift when cold and then would be ok when it warmed up.
Since the sensor is only $25 and easy to swap out I would suggest that it be replaced prior to doing any major effort.
Thanks to all for the help you gave and for having such a nice resource available to everyone.
