Auto Trans Shift Pattern

I think I have this but I would like to confirm. The auto trans is listed as a 4 spd with the OD being 4th. When I lock out the OD, it seems like I feel a 4th gear before OD would normally kick in. I am assuming that this is the TC locking up. Is this correct?

If so, does the TC lockup hold through the shift to OD or does it come out, shift to OD, and then lockup again?

Re:Auto Trans Shift Pattern

That "4th gear shift" you feel when locked out of OD IS the TC locking up. There is a little difference in the shift and the lockup, which yo u may notice after a while.
The stock TC does not have a strong enough lock-up to shift when locked. It will unlock, shift into OD, then lock up again.

Chris

Re:Auto Trans Shift Pattern

Thanks for clarifying that.

My tranny has started 'hunting' ??? the TC lockup once I get into OD. This only happens between 45 - 50 mph at 1200 - 1500 rpm. If I am pulling hard, i.e. shift to OD above 50 and keep accelerating, I seem to blow through it without a hunt. If not and I am just running there, it seems to hunt. Any ideas?

Re:Auto Trans Shift Pattern

Mine was doing the same thing when I did the relearn for the T.P.S {I call it} for another problem and the lock-up hunt at 45-50 under load went away also. So you might give a try, I think the procedure is posted somewere on this site. Hope this helps

Take Care,
FreightTrain Wayneo
