Auto Tranny Question

I just got back from a hard up hill tow with my 02 2500 47re trans. I checked the fluid before the return trip and it reads fine on the top or marked side of the dip stick, but on bottom side or underside it reads low. There is about an inch difference from the top to the bottom of the dip stick. The tranny ran fine but it did like to bump out of lockup in 4th gear and it never has before.

The manual calles for ATF type 4 not 3 like I've read on here.

Ideas?

Thanks
Bill.

I don't understand your reading the dipstick. How can you have 2 readings?

I've seen this too, and wondered about it.

Fluid shows on the "top" (marked side) of the dipstick,
but not on the back. Almost like it gets wiped off
coming out of the tube. I tried leaving the dipstick in
a little longer and wriggling it around some, but I
think I ended up just rationalizing it to the solution
I wanted.

Generally speaking, once the fluid starts getting to the proper level, it starts to level out on the stick. You might want to try adding some, a little at a time and see what happens.

Yup...ATF+4 only.

Since you have read the manual, I assume you know to check ATF when warm...and when running...in Nuetral....after running through the gears manually, with foot on thr brake. 1,2,D,....N. (to fill all the nooks & crannys conpletely?

Have never gotten two different readings on a full tranny, when doing it this way.

Sounds like its low, both sides of the dip stick should read the same when properly filled.

Any special ATF4 or just the normal stuff. There was a blerb in the manual about some mobile ATF4 to help with lockup.

thanks again.

The only two I would consider are...
Mopar ATF+4
Amsoil ATF (which meets ATF+4 specs).

I prefer the Amsoil Synthetic, particularly for stock tranny...but it's really your choice.

Bill, I think that I read that the stock transmission pan is not the best and to run the level a little high on the stick to help. I dont remember how high the fluid had to get to cause problems, but it seems that it was a good ways up on the stick. The fluid level may not be a problem in your case though. good luck Jim
