Auto Tranny?

I know that the 6-speed manual is a good transmission. But the absolute worst things that I have ever heard about dodges are that the automatic transmission is a POS.

I have never heard from someone thats close to me though and never from anyone that doesent tell stories or that I trust. So, not that I trust you guys but lets do it this way. If you have never had a problem with your auto tranny then please say so, and if you have please say so.

If I can I'll even make it a poll.

Please though, I am looking for posters who have 1998-2002 CTD trucks. I know that the new autos are okay, just dont know anything about the old ones' reputation.

I think it's unfair to say that the Dodge 47re is a POS. Yes there has been many who have had problems, but of those having problems, how many are bone stock? How many have major power upgrades to the engine? How well are those maintained?
The 47re is up the the job if the truck is left stock or close to stock AND it's maintained regularly. JMO

I personally never said that it was a POS. I said that the people who have told me about them think they are a POS. I havent had the pleasure of driving one yet, therefore dont think that I am qualified to say that it is a POS.

As for the people who have selected that they have had problems, would you mind posting what the problem was and if in fact your truck has mods done to it or not?

Hey Kammak

Think about getting your alternator rebuilt before spending all that money on the tranny. Mine was doing the same thing and I did the apps reset, redid all the grounds etc and ended up taking the alternator off and taking to a rebuilder. He said I had a diode out and the brushes were worn enough to create the noise that caused the tranny problem. No problems since.
Mine had around 150,000 on the original.

Cheap fix if it will work for you.

Mine had been filled with the wrong fluid by the prev. owner, and later had a hard life caused by an Edge Pulse module. (So, I know that it wasn't DCs fault that it died)
On some stockers I found that most of the problems were misadjusted bands, fluid and filter not changed and some electronics that failed (gov. press. sensor and solenoid- nothing too bad)
Quite a few have problems with the PCM commanding the tranny in and out of lockup etc. This is usually caused by electrical noise. There are also some troubles with wiring damage... but this is IMO no tranny problem, but it will show in the tranny.
I rebuilt mine with DTT parts. Works like a charm.

The only issue I have had was with a flaky TPS. Had to replace it to get my OD functioning 100 percent correct.

Man, other than that, I have beat on mine pretty hard, including loads that are stupid and no issues.

I am stock though, I am quite sure you can kill one pretty quick if you turn up the wick.

Mine had 335,000Kms on the stock tranny, the TC finally let go. apparently they are a stout tranny for what is asked of them. the fact that the tranny's lub circuit does not work in park plays a huge part in tranny failure. unless you upgrade the VB, when idleing in park none of the rotating parts recieve oil. I had mine rebuilt locally with a Transgo shift kit,and they built a single disc billet cover TC as well, found out later I should have had the stall lowered 500-700rpm. (live and learn I guess).
I had heard the same about the dodge tranny, then I bought a truck to use as a courior, I planned on having the tranny and VP done at some time, so far the last 40,000Kms have seen lots of hard use, I'd expect the tranny to hold for a long time with proper maint and oil changes
I paid 2200$ to have mine done, a ford F250 (gasser) was over 3500$, compairing trannys the dodge is cheaper to have built IMO

Mine was electrical noise related. Re-routing and shielding of some wires and it fixed my problem.

Only thing that i have had to fix so far is replacing a sensor that would not let it shift past 2nd, so it was drinkin the fuel.haha Other than that just the back and forth at 45, doesn't happen as much when its cold or now that i have my chip turned up.

The only problems I've had have been related to bad grounds at the battery. The sad thing is these transmissions could have been awesome of Dodge had just spent a little more money to put a good torque converter and valve body in them from the factory instead of just throwing in parts that were marginal for the gas engines they were designed for. There are alot of modified 47RE and 47RH transmissions on the road standing up to huge hp numbers and lots of abuse sled pulling and drag racing without any problem at all.

So what would you guys do to the 47RE to beef it up "enough" to make me feel that it is reliable and wont take a crap on me on a lomg trip or something?

Maybe a TC, and an ATS valve body? Would that be "enough?"
