ATS Transmissions

I posted one tread asking about adjusting the bands on my R47RE an appreciated the responces I got . That being said I know in the future I will be overhauling or replacing it as I plan too keep this truck . I want be abuseing it Drag raceing or sled pulling . But I will increase the HP an Tourqe
loking for MPG as well as power . I do pull some farm equip on occasion but not super heavy or all that long of distance . I was wondering if any one on here is useing ATS an there exsperince with them . As I've said I want be doing anything extreme but I would really enjoy being able to set the lock up speed on the TC an stop the free wheeling at slower speeds . I guess i'm not quite sure what set up i'll need I know the builder will make recomendations. But if any of you guys out there might give me some insight from your exsperince it might help me through the process of what selecting what I need verses overkill. I live in East Tenn if that helps anyone steer me in one direction or the othere . Anothere thing i've wondered about since i'm not in a big hurry is if I came across a R48re that needed building would that be any
advantage , or would the Electronincs be an issue the truck is a 2001 2500 .
Well thanks ahead of time for your help an input didn't mean to write a book !

Give Tony Garcin @ Dunrite a call. He can give you a lot of information to help you out and decide what you need. He doesn't try to sell you anything you don't need for your application. (360)-693-3200

Go elsewhere for trans work. I read posts over and over about guys that get one, and in 2 years are on their third trans. If you have a problem, ATS might warranty it, but they wont get back to you for months. Plus they cost more than other transmissions. Are you wanting a rebuilt transmission, or just a convertor and valvebody?

Im getting ready to order a full billet HTS trans. Good customer service and one of the best out there. Links to HTS and other good builders:

I wouldnt hesitate to buy a trans from any of these guys

Ats

Thanks for the insite an food for thought I had seen a add in Diesel on Dunrite but not on goerend . Stroke I do intend to go through the whole thing its got 135000 on it an never been apart . I would really like to have mine built instead of doing the exchange . Mainly just because I know the history of my unit an that its not been through a melt down . I didn't see any authorized builders for my area closest being Ohio for goerend but i'm sure that proubly could be solved . I really appreciate these links you guys gave me. Thats what makes this site great shareing info with people who can help cut through the hipe of advertisement with real exsperinces .

No Ats

Thanks Stroke I'm leaning toword goerend from reading on the sights that have been suggested . But all of the ones that have been suggested have good points . My trans is not out yet so I've still got time to shop an compare . Although I hauled a load of Oak wood today I did not weigh it but it was heavy . An I live here in the hills of Tenn so it gives the drive train a job to do . Its never slipped after a shift but the shifts just aren't positive an it takes it a while to go to 3rd an lock up when going up grade . So after you get your speed up basically you lift a little then it'll shift . If I was doing much pulling like this it wouldn't last long . Ha! the motor seemed to be saying go ahead I dare you an the transmission was saying go ahead an I'll make your day .

Another vote for HTS. I bought the Ultimate Duty with a single Suncoast VB, stock shafts and double deep pan and can't be happier. I had the chance to tow for the first time this weekend and was impressed. Shifts were firm and it seemed to get up to speed A LOT quicker and temps were never an issue. HTS was the cheapest out of the ones I called with Dave never returning my call so he was out. I know he's a busy man but I couldn't wait and have never been known to have much patience. Anyway, I have 4K in my tranny and that's with shipping and paying my local installer. Best money I've spent on the truck to date.

Just be sure to go with one of the trusted brands recommended on this site because these guys really do abuse their trannys and if they hold for them, just imagine what they would do for you.

I don't abuse my tranny- it's a DTT. I never wanted to bomb my truck- too much . Well, with M3s and a smarty it isn't exactly bombed, just made to perform as it should.
My personal experience with DTT is absolutely top notch- ATS wouldn't ship then and the others weren't known to me then or weren't yet opened. My tranny has stood up to my use for about 150 k miles or a little more now. Flawless.

Jut my 2c

This thread is NOT going to turn into an ATS bashing thread!!

Regardless of what anyones opinion is here, I am going to say ATS is NOT JUNK!! I have been running their transmissions in my trucks since 2001 and have not had ANY serious problems with them since that time! My current race truck (1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve) currently puts down over 800 H.P. to the ground, runs a 11.52 second quarter mile and this past summer I have "launched" the truck over 75 times at many of the drag race events across this country. Like some of you, I can give you PLENTY of examples from ALL of the other diesel tranny builders where guys have had trouble or brole parts. Sometimes it just happens, but my experiences with ATS have been great, I have received excellent customer service and IMHO they build a very good tranny.

Well John... I have had an open mind on trannys. Since my auto is still stock, i am looking for a good tranny upgrade someday. Honestly, you are the first person that has given ATS a good report that i have read.
Now i'm am not bashing ATS but... I have not read a bad report on GB or HTS (yet) and i have read plenty of bad reports on ATS.

chainzaw:

Thanks for your input. There are many other people in DTR that have ATS trannies that I know have had very good service from their transmissions including a few of my buddies Keith Livingstone (Rammin On), Jimmy Smith (smittybuilt) and Lary Ellis (Top). Like I said above, ALL aftermarket trannies can experience problems. I would agree that Dave Goerend builds one heck of a good tranny and you don't hear much bad about him or his company for whatever reason which is good. I know very little about HTS. The main point here is these threads are NOT going to become a "bashing ATS" issue.

I wasnt bashing ATS, just stating what pretty much everybody knows. Look up any transmission thread and somebody will have a bad experience with ATS. I didnt give them the rep they have, they earned it themselves. Its not childish banter, just my opinion. Everybody has one. I havent insulted ATS anymore than theyve insulted themselves. Hiding from warranty claims is childish IMO. Its simply unacceptable for a business to do that. Im not tryin to be a jerk, thats just my two cents. Glad to see someone has a good experience with their trans...
