I just finished a 2000 mile trip this past week and on the way home i had a little trouble. I had the cruise on the highway and was doing from 75-80 mph. When i was getting into a city about 6 hours of driving later, i slowed too 60 mph and reset the cruise. All of a sudden the tranny kicked down and i went like a bat outta hell. It did this a couple of times and then i manually worked the throttle. I noticed that from about 3/8 to 3/4 throttle had a dead spot. 1/4 throttle would hold me at 50, and in order too hit 60 i had too mash the go pedal. Watching the overhead display i wasnt using any extra fuel in the dead spot area.....fuel consumption would fall off a bit untill i hit 3/4 throttle. This carried on for about 5 minutes and then cleared up.
Is this possibly early signs of the tps (apps) getting ready to screw the pooch?? And feed back would be greatly appreciated. It is still under warranty, but i wanna have an idea of what too tell the shop so that the idiots we call DC techs can pin point it a little quicker...thanks.
Jon.

Any kind of surging, bucking, low power, etc. Mine was doing very similar to yours during a trip to the coast this last long weekend. I did the APPS reset and everything. Ended up being the Injection Pump.
Have you pulled any codes off the odometer?

my warranty is still good for another 5 or so years, plus another 40,000 miles.
No codes were sent at all, this is the problem i am having.
If it were the injection pump....wouldnt it do it for a longer time than 4 or 5 minutes? Cause i drove another 5 hours and it didnt even sniffle at me!!

Mine was the same way.
It set a 1693 code, when I had it scanned, the 216 code showed it's ugly head. The truck would run great for awhile, they went for a dump at various times. First thing in the morning and for about 20 minutes or so, it ran awesome!!! As it heated up, driveability dropped off.
This last weekend on my trip to the coast, the truck ran perfect. 4 hours into the trip, the pedal symptoms started showing up. After about an hour, they went away as did the power, she was gutless!!. At the coast, it ran fine around town. On the trip back, same thing.....4 or 5 hours into the trip, it all started again.
Back home, I pulled the injectors and EZ box out to eliminate those from the equation. They were masking the problem a lot more than I thought they would. Power was none existent, truck was gutless, pedal was not responding at most times.
Scanned the ECM and the 216 code showed up. Lift pump and fuel pressure was not an issue, APPS had been reset a bunch of times, etc, etc. Had the pump replaced and truck is like new.
First thing would be to get your truck scanned to see what you have for codes. My 216 code didn't show on the odometer, they had to go deeper.
I'm tempted to say you will find the death code. Sorry

No problem.....and no need too be sorry, if the deathcode shows up....chrysler is the one who has to pay for parts and labour and supply me with another truck while it is in the shop....lol. I have warranty out the wazoo...so no problems for me!!
One question...how long is the truck in the shop before they are all said and done??

They got the authorization for the pump Monday afternoon. Pump was on the shelf, but the Red Deer depot has them overnight. I dropped my truck off at 8:00 am and picked it up at 2:00 pm the same day.
Get them to get the authorization and parts before you take it in. Book time is 4.5 hours to replace, so you will have it back in a day.
One thing to mention is Chrysler is VERY picking about fuel filter change intervals and will want the schedule of changes and proof if you are doing them yourself. I get my dealer to change it every 20,000 km and I do it in between those. They didn't even blink about it because I am within their schedule.
Hope it helps

well they wont have much choice but too do it....I just bought the truck used about 2 months ago....and i bought it from londonderry chrysler here in edmonton. So like i said...they dont have much choice!!
Looks like i am having the same problems as you 2 other guys with 02's are having.Same dead pedal after a few hours of driving, white smoke, and sputtering. However no 0216 code yet {on the dash} anyway.Does anyone know how long these things will last BEFORE showing the code on the dash? mine has been doing this for over a month now and about 12,000 miles...and does Cummins validate a 100,000 mile warranty if you are the second owner of the truck? You would think by 2002 these idiots would have fixed the bugs out on these trucks..i miss my 12 valve

I think we can all agree, that the majority of service techs employed by Dodge Dealerships are not very versed in the workings of the Cummins Diesel Engine.
At least this was true in the past.
I'm sure with the increased sales of Diesel powered pickups, this is changing for the better.
There are some very qualified Diesel Techs at a choice few dealerships though,
so we can't call them all bad names.
Now back to the subject at hand,
I'm sure we can all use the wealth of knowlege posessed by those who know what they are doing.

Well i agree that there are SOME Techs that know what they are doing...but the ones at my dealership are horrible. I actually had too show three of them how too check for bad ball joints when i had my Dakota. Now a 35 year old back yard mechanic knows how too check, but these "proffessionals" didnt. Thats why i had too find another dealer!!!
