Anyone have an idea? DRIVELINE CLUNK
Anyone have an idea? DRIVELINE CLUNK
Ok, here's the deal. I have a 2002 CTD...long bed dually...2 wheel drive. I have an annoying "CLUNK" that occurs at about 10-13 mph right before my truck comes to a stop at a stoplight, sign or what have you. I assume what I feel is a downshift into 2nd gear. I have pulled the driveshaft (2 piece with center support bearing setup). I took off the boot and pulled the 2 pieces apart, cleaned splines and regreased, put boot back on and reinstalled. No dime! Did nothing! I did notice that the two pieces were hard to separate and to get back together. Is this normal? Anywho, I'm not sure where to turn next. NOTE: I do have a 2'' coil spacer on the front coils (2wd). Could this be due to pinion angle? Do I need to shim my center support bearing on the driveshaft? Do I need u-joints? Also, the clunk is less pronounced at very slow stops and does not occur at all if I shift to (N) before a stop.
Any ideas? TIA

I was gonna say control arm bushings but you're 2wd.
Couple of ideas to check: brake calipers to make sure they move freely, that the shocks are not loose and that the bolts which secure the leaf springs are tight.

Bowling ball in bed?
No seriously, if you have a bad u-joint it may do this. Look for a brown/red rusty dust around the seals. Its a sure sign they need replacement.
Is it a 5/6 speed or an auto?
Front suspension may need a go over.
Can you tell the general area of the source?

It sounds like a u-joint or a transmission issue. Carefully look over ever u-joint. Tug, pull, and twist them looking for any movement or problems. I believe that you can even eliminate the carrier bearing but that would involve having a new driveshaft built. You said you noticed that it does it when the tranny shifts down as you're stopping. Can you force it to do it?
