Anyone with access to Cummins info?

I am trying to help a friend source an engine for his 98.5. We have found an 01 for a good deal. the problem is that I'm not sure if the crank shaft on an 01 has a tone ring on it to accept a CKP. The block has the provision for the CKP - there is just a block off plate where the sensor bolts in. I wanted to try and see if the part #'s for the crank shafts for the 2 engines would be the same. I have the Cummins serial #'s and CPL's for both engines if anyone has access to Cummins engine component part #'s.

Any help would be appreciated!

What is the 98.5 serial # and the 01, I will look them up for you, or you could call a local cummins dealer.

Hey thanks!

Local Cummins dealer = very unhelpful

98.5 = #56456762

01 = #56722524

I'm interested in seeing if the crank shafts are the same.

Thank you very, very much.

The 01 and 02 cranks will not have the tone ring like the older 98.5-00 trucks.

Are you 100% sure that the 01-02 crank does not have the tone ring on it? This is what I'm trying to verify.

No I am just making things up as I go.

There is no tone ring on the 01-02 cranks. Signals are taken from the rear of the cam gear.

98.5 through part of 2000 used the tone wheel type cranks.
The reason the block still has a boss and a hole (that is covered) for the tone wheel on later models is that the industrial/commercial type ISB's still used the tone wheel type of crank while the 01/02 Chrysler type engines did not.

Further I would rather have the crank that does not have the tone wheel since it is not relief cut for the installation of the tone wheel. The one without the little wheel would be stronger.

Have you considered swapping cranks from engine to engine? (or is the crank toasted?)

I know you aren't making things up! I wanted to be 100% sure. Trying to find a decent 98.5-00 engine is difficult around here. The 01 we were looking at doesn't have a pump or ECM so I don't know how we would get to run with the 98.5 ECM then needs a CKP sensor. For that matter, If I could find an 01 ECM, would there be any complications with using it in a 98.5 truck? Would the 98.5 wiring harness work with the 01 ECM?

We don't really want to get into swapping cranks since we might as well just do a complete engine rebuild if the crank is coming out. The 98.5 crank is not toasted to my knowledge. The engine has 300K miles on it but runs great and has good oil pressure....we just need to get another engine because it is a badly cracked 53 that leaks big time.

If I remember right, I remember reading about someone using an 01 or newer type of engine (no tone wheel) in an older truck. I am not sure what they did to get it to work.

You might try calling different diesel shops that do conversions and see what they say about it.

I believe I would buy the 01 blk and change cranks. If nothing else do the bottom end., if you know the 01 long block to be a good engine.

There is no tone ring on 01/02 cranks ... the tone ring is on the cam gear. If you chnge cranks, you'll need to change the cam and the timing case - they are different.
