Another VP thread! Could use some help.

My VP has been pretty sketchy now for about three months. I have been puting off replacement just cuz of the price, but its to the point now that it is going to be necessary to do something very soon! But I just want confirmation that it is my IP, befor I drop the large amount of cash on one!

Far as symptom go, The truck will just really kind of die out when it feels like it. The engine will continue to run, but it gets very quiet, looses almost all power, and will not spool the turbo. If I pull over and put the truck in neutral and rev it, it runs rough, white smokes and revs very slowly, even with the pedal to the floor, it will not exceed about 2500 rpm's. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when or for how long it will do this, but eventually it just snaps out of it and comes back to life!

I cycled the key when I got home from work and got the codes. First, it shows, P PCU, codes P 0500 and P1693. Then it shows P ECU, codes P 1693 and P 0216.

Next, if this is infact my VP, Where is the best place to get one? Looking for a good deal, but still want quality. Will probably also install an air dog or FASS system at same time since I have now FP guage, and it since my LP is still on the block, im thinking its the stocker.

Thanks for any and all help!

Anyone? Can I safely suspect that it is in fact my IP? Just dont want to start "parts changing" with $1k+ dollar parts just to find out that didnt fix it!

The code says it is an internal timing issue. The VP controls this.
It is time to replace it.
I choose Blue Chip. It has been great with no issues for about 80,000 miles.
Industrial injection also has a good reputation, as do scheids.

Thanks for the replys. I will check those companies out

Can anyone tell me what the other codes mean? And what does PCU stand for?

Think the best deal i have found so far is through mwfi.com, right around $1080, can get it with a fass system for like $1660 I think. I want to get either a Fass or AirDog system while im at it, kinda leaning toward the airdog, just to save a couple hundred bucks (Thats two tanks of fuel!). Have the airdog's been pretty trouble free for everyone? Do they come with anything needed for install?

I am also planning on a new cam position sensor while im at it, probably a new map sensor just because, and would love to do a set of RV 275's and an overhead at the same time. Im really hoping to see an improvement in mileage with all this from my 15.5mpg average.

What's your mileage? Search the General area for my WOOHOO post. You might get lucky and Chrysler kick in the $$$$ for replacement.

Checked out your post, looks like it took some doing, but you got it through. Good for you!

After reading 2500ram's post, I went out to my truck today and got the factory provided warranty manual out of the glove box. Acctual wording, directly out of this manual states:
"If your truck is equipped with a cummins diesel engine, the cummins diesel engine limited warranty begins at the end of the 3/36 basic limited warranty period, and covers the cost of repairing those parts of your truck engine listed that are defective in materials, workmanship, or factory preperation."

It then goes on to list the components that are covered, the fuel injection pump and injectors are the fourth item on the list.

So as stated, my truck is an '02 with 62k miles on it, and the only mods done to it are intake and exhaust. I see no reason why this could not be covered under the cummins engine warranty, anyone else have input on this? I think, first thing Tuesday morning, I will be calling my dealership to set up an appointment, and will definately be trying to get this covered under warranty. Like I said, I dont see how they could deny it, its right here in black and white print in my factory supplied warranty manual!!!!!

Any suggestions about how I should approach this, what to do if they will not honor the warranty, or any of that good stuff?

Thanks very much 2500ram, I really hope I can get this pushed through, this is a repair that I really do not want to fit into my budget right now!

The dealer will probably try to fight you on this, I hope not. I had to pay to have mine replaced, but then I got my money back right from the mother ship. I have all of my original documentation if you need help. I also have the DC corp 800 no. for customer service.

Look in the back of your warranty manual and call Chrysler before you take it to Dodge. You will get no where over the phone with them but your VIN will be in the system stating your fighting warranty coverage. I got the Regional manager involved before talking to the Service manager. She didn't want to deal with me so she pawned me off to the service manager. All told about 6 hours on the phone and a total of $310 for my VP. $200 to get replaced for "diagnostics" at the dealer that fixed it and $110 for the dealer that wouldn't talk to me about the warranty.

I got VERY lucky that I didn't have to foot the entire bill upfront. I wasn't rude, demanding, vulgar etc. I just clearly stated to please read the manual to me. The Cummins Warranty begins AFTER the 3/36 basic warranty, cut off service manager. Ok so the Cummins warranty does begin after the 3/36 bla bla bla. He said he had to call me back, he called Chrysler and then called me back about 4 hours later to set an appt time.

Nowhere in the manual does it say the Cummins warranty starts at the in service date like every other engine in the manual. Again another item to point out. Also the wording is the same from 99-06 or 07 when the wording changed in the manual, why did the wording change mr service manger?

**edit**

I did mention in a non threatening way that I would get my lawyers involved and the State Attorney general for the wording in the manual but I didn't want to have to do that. If you could just call Chrysler and get this fixed under the warranty printed in your book.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I can hardly wait for tommorow to get here so I can see whats going to happen with all of this. I figured it would be best to call my dealership and see what they say? I figured best case scenario would be that they tell me right off the bat that it will be covered. Worst case is of course that they tell me that they wont cover it. And if so, then I figured at that point I will get a hold of chrysler headquarters.

I definately will not be rude, or vulgar, as that seems to never get you too far. But I do plan on standing my ground, and making it known that I will accept nothing less than dodge fullfilling the warranty that they wrote! I am also preppared to get my lawyer and/or the states attorney involved if needed, but that will definately be a last ditch effort.

I have read the warranty over and over again, and still can just not find any way that dodge could claim they will not cover this? It is very clearly stated in black and white print that my engine is still very much under factory warranty! In the mean time, I will keep my fingers crossed, and will definately keep you all posted. I cant tell you how grateful I am to you 2500ram for making me aware of this! I was about to rack up some serious debt on my newly paid off credit card and was not looking forward to that one bit!

Angry Another VP thread

Go for the coverage! I bought my truck new in '02, thought it should have had more power, and better milage from the 'getgo'. I got 16MPG, and a delay in acceleration. My dealer and all the locals told me let the motor break in and it will improve. By 2004 and 30K, I read about 'dead pedal' here and other sites, and they all pointed to aftermarket chips. I put in a Power Puck and saw a little milage gain, but much better acceleration and power. Problem solved.

2007 (over 70K) brought a new powerloss, inconsistent, and never stranded. Several sensors later, I gave up and brought it to my local diesel tech. They said the Power Puck went bad, and removed it. Drove OK for about 1000K and then kept going into 'limp mode' with a 216 code. I found a new mechanic who was willing to trouble shoot without replacing everthing at once and got a new transfer pump. The power loss continued to degrade, especially when towing. Two weeks ago, we gave up and replaced the VP. It never completely failed, but the code kept coming back. Now it runs better than when I first bought it. I cannot wait to check the milage, or try hauling. I am out $2K plus the fuel pump and chucked the power puck, but the truck is back.

I think Cummins or Dodge had a bad run of the injection pumps and didn't own up to it. I am out of warantee now so my loss. If you can push the bill back to them more power to you. They should cover it. It has been a great truck, never left us stranded, plows, tows, commutes, pulls stumps, whatever. It just never had the power it does today. I wish I pushed the issue 6 years ago. Good luck.

Thanks rdram, and yes I will be pushing this!

I hear you on the power thing, my truck is the same way, even though i have only owned it for around four months now! It seems less powerful than my olnd 7.3 and does not tow as well as the old 7.3 or my dads 6.0. I am also now down to 14.5 mpg, best I have ever gotten was 16. That is on a bone stock truck, with just intake and exhaust. I am definately hoping for a power and mileage increase with a new pump. Oh, and I have the same symptoms as you as well. Never left me stranded, but goes into limp mode very often now days, and is a huge nuisence!
