Am I in Denial or is it a dead VP44?

Want to check the codes my engine is throwing myself. Need to know what tool yawl are using, It’s cost or how I can get it done for$0. Been told by mechanic the VP44 is dead and no other codes are showing but 216. But symptoms are more like a bad APPS (dead pedal @1500 rpm not at different rpm). Could a 216 appear as a result of any temporary situation?

History is lift pump replaced, mechanical FP gauge and filter changed @15k miles ago. FPG monitors supply side of fuel filter. I know it’s not the best side but thought it was better than nothing at the time. Will work on it. FPG has never shown less than 10psi @WOT or during dead pedal episodes. No check engine lights or codes doing key recycle.

Symptoms first appeared when I was @1500 miles from home last week. I had an occurrence and downshifted and it went away. Thought it may be some bad fuel and added a bunch of Howes to the tank. Continued to have intermittent episodes usually in bunches but with long stretches 4-5 hours at highway speeds without them and carrying a 1700# + camper. FPG normal. The last 400 miles of the trip I got a little under 14MPG and for half of that portion bucked some very high head winds. Starts easily hot or cold.

What ticks me off is how nonchalant the mechanic is with my money and can’t even tell me if there is some test he could run on the pump to confirm the diagnoses. There is and he doesn’t know it or is too lazy to find out. Has anyone done the vacuum test outlined in the service manual? Is it effective and conclusive?

I just can’t imagine the pump remanufactures sending my money back if the core passes their bench test can you? And they wouldn’t resell that core without a through inspection would they? Follow the money.

Which brings me to the quality of remanufactured pumps. How can I be sure that a remanufactured pump has all of the 7or 8 upgrades new pumps have? Who is the supplier most often mentioned on this board as honest and reliable? Should I pop for a racing VP if I plan on installing a power upgrade? Does the racing VP get the added horsepower without any other add on. If so then I don’t need to buy a chip and the extra cost is worth it? I know this is long but appreciate any help you can give. Thanks in advance.

Engine has 160K If memory serves me the IP was replaced by the dealer @ 100K
