Alternator type?

Im getting ready to order an on-board air system for my truck from kilby ent. www.onboardair.com But the setup for the 24v says &quot;must have Nippondenso alternator&quot;. Did the trucks come with different alternators or is there an aftermarket one that needs to be purchased? Anybody else running this system or heard anything about it yet? thanks <br> Evil

Re:Alternator type?

They don't all have the same alternator. There are at least two different suppliers, I think, Nippondenso and maybe Delco(?).

Re:Alternator type?

According to info I've found for 2000-2001 Rams, the diesels are equipped with 136 amp Bosch alternators. Nippondenso appear to have been used on earlier Rams.

Re:Alternator type?

My model year 2000 Ram has the Nippondenso.

The Bosch alternators are obvious. they say Bosch on them and the back of the alternator is black.

The Nippondenso has a metal 'can' over the back of the alternator.

A bit of flashlight and mirror work should convince you of your alternator manufacturer.

Anybody know what the primary differences are between them?

Re:Alternator type?

I have this system on the dodge. My 02 came with the bosch, so all I did was go to the junk yard, pick up a nippendenso from a 99' and put the different pulley in and it was fairly easy. The shaft is shorter on the bosch. I talked to Brad at Kilby and I think he is trying to make a pulley for the bosch, but it will take a while.

Re:Alternator type?

Did you have to cut or move anything to make the air compressor fit like you have to on the Jeeps?

Re:Alternator type?

Fairly easy setup, took about 4 hours and if I did it again, it would take an hour tops. The bracket that mounts to alternator to the engine gets replaced with the supplied bracket. Also, the wiring is a little different. The bosch has a plug in style and the nip has a screw on style. I just took some wire connectors and spliced into the wire. Thats about it.
