Alternator Problem

Yesterday coming back from the farm, about an hour drive, the check gage lit up, i glanced at all of the gages, the only one that appeared to be not correct was the volt gauge. We stopped about a mile from home for a snack, but when we tried to start the truck, nothing happened. So AAA was called for a jump. It appears that the alternator is shot.
I have an early, early 1998.5 Cummins 24 valve engine. What engine code is needed for the proper alternator as two different codes are shown in the auto store.
Thanks.

your engine code is on the timing gear cover. this is a cummins number, depending on your parts guy you mite be able to give him your vin.

You really can't tell by the engine code, you either have a 120 amp or a 136 amp. Functionally I can't see any difference. The same Alt. was used for years on trucks, vans, etc, all you need to do is make sure you have the correct 8 rib pulley.

I would suspect they are looking for the 8th VIN digit, something like 6 for a 24 valve and a D for a 12 valve.

depending on what is wrong with the alt. you can get rebuild kits from
www.genosgarage.com for denso or bosch alternators

You are looking for the CPL or Control Parts List number on the engine ID tag, IIRC it is 4 digits....
