alternative to cummins for lift pump?

I know the dealer would sell one but I have been trying to buy a pump from Cummins and they dont seem to be able to get one. I keep getting told next week and when I go they dont have one then either. I dont trust their sales enough to let them try and order one from another branch and ship it to me (long story but if you lived here it would make sense..they just arent the most knowledgable to put it mildly) . Is there another source for a cummins pump. I know the number and it should be a simple thing to get but I'm hitting a brick wall and mine is dying fast. I know I should carry a spare but I just kept putting it off. Thanks for any help.

My Cummins shop here had it the next day. I could get you one and send it to you if needed. I don't know where you live, but call a cummins shop in a big city and have them drop ship it to you.

I don't know first hand but have read a forum where it said that you could buy a carter lift pump through NAPA for about $40.00. the price sure beats Dodge and Cummings.
Thats where I'll be looking for one. I'll try and find the forum and get back to you with it.

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

I'm 90 miles from the nearest cumming shop. I have went there three times when all I wanted to do was buy one for a spare. I now need one and just never thought about calling a cummins branch in some other city--maybe Im just stressed because I need the truck. I dont want to drive it with these low pressures or should i say no pressure!! It does still run but there is absolutely no pressure on medium to wot and my guage is good. I'm still searching the net and I appreciate any ideas. I'm not opposed to a Carter but I don't know anything about them and I'll be doing good to do a direct replacement and get it to crank because Im not accustomed to working on Diesels.

The post I read said the cummings pump was a carter with a cummings sticker on it.

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

Larry, I may be in the market for a lift pump as well, I'll know after I take the truck in tomarrow. If I do, I can get a second one for you and maybe ship it/or meet up somewhere. Either way I can check the Cummins shop here if you can give me the number (not sure about they parts ID abiality yet since they couldn't get the air/oil/fuel filter right - yes the blew all three)

worst case, I work with a guy that lives in Cookville, I could always get it to him to drop off to you.

I'm not sure if I read it on this site or not.
It may have been on diesel ram .com
I've done lots of reading on both sites.

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

Roy, according to the cummings shop in Nash. there isnt one in the whole state and the closest they could locate was in Louisville, Ky. I think its time to bite the bullet and just pay the dealer two prices for it. I did find one place online that has them..www.jannettyracing.com for $219
$160 at cummins if they could ever get one in but you know how they are.

Ranch Hand, I do want to carry a spare in the future so I am going to check with Napa and see what they might have.

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

almost too funny!!! I have two dealers near me here and neither has a pump in stock. I ordered one from Louisville Ky. and it should be here the first of next week. My 'friendly' dealers say that it isnt covered under the 100 K mile engine warranty but thats ok, I'll change it myself and remember them when its time to trade ;D thanks for all the advice..

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

The lift pump died on my '98.5 when the truck had somewhere around 45k miles on it. Dealer replaced it under warranty. The service manager said it was covered under the Emissions Warranty.

Dealers are afraid to replace lots of things under the warranty, since the DC auditors may kick back some ot the work when they do a warranty audit. Then the dealer has to eat the bill. All they have to do is call the STAR hotline and get authorization. I guess that would be too much trouble.

You have the right idea to deal with this Larry. Spend your money somewhere else. The bottom line ($$) is what gets their attention.

Here's where to look to see who else might carry Cummins parts in your neck-of-the-woods.

I bet the Dealer hates STAR as much as we do.

If STAR denies a warranty claim, who does the customer hate?
STAR, no, but the Dealer and it probably just lost him a customer.

And it's a pain, being a grownup and still having to ask the parents for permission to do something.

Dealers do get a bad rap on boards such as these, but there are some gems in the pooppile, right Luke?

Re:alternative to cummins for lift pump?

I couldn't agree more and yes, it would be difficult having Star over the shoulder monitoring every repair. Some folks try and deceive them about mods..true, and that isn't fair or honest buttttttttttttttt. :

I dont think any post in this thread calls them the "S" word ---how did this thread take this direction anyway, Gees!!-and I realize it is a business and ran for profit but some are better than others. I had a '95 that lost the fifth gear nut and it was about 500 miles out of the warranty. Neither local dealer would cover it and I understood perfectly but another dealer 90 miles from here did cover it-- you guess where I bought the '01 at!!! Business is business and I understand but its like in my business which isnt automotive related, if I go a little extra for a customer he usually comes back.

The lift pump I started this thread about cost me 162 from Cummins. The dealers (who didn't even have one in stock) wanted $285...the dealer 90 miles from confirmed they would replace it under warranty(they would have had to order it too) but I just don't want to drive the truck with the low pressure like it has now.

The business can set the price and choose how much to go out of their way to help a customer and the customer can choose who and where to buy. BTW, I have no engine mods as of yet that could even remotely affect the pump.
