Allison Automatic?

I am shopping for a late model used cummins truck. 2 sales guys told me today that the 4 speed auto in the new Dodges is made by Allison. What year did this start, and are these good autos? One guy thought it was 2004.

They are so incorrect it's sad.

The new, late 2003 to current, have the 48RE automatic transmission.

Thanks, Phox for the reply. I'm assuming that the 48RE is made by Chrysler. Right?

Yes, the 48RE is an updated 47RE built by Chrysler.

It never ceases to amaze me how little the salesmen at the dealers know about the products they sell.

I think many salespeople will say anything to make a sale....

GM filled up people's brain with the Allison transmission deal, now everybody knows what they are.

Since they carry a good rep. these 2 salesman invented the story of the Allison in a Dodge.

.....I might add the 48re has had a pretty good record in the reliability department.

I studied the situation for a while, since I could put my hands on an Allison 2400 transmission for my truck.

For what I gathered they are all good transmissions if we stay within the mfg stock HP or very slightly above. Beyond that they all crash regardless of type and brands.

Allison 1000, Ford, 47RE, 48RE thay will stand a lot of use but go up some more HP and you'll tear it apart.

What?
I thought the Cummins/Allison was an option with the new Fords!

We have a 2004 version of these running around the plant.http://www.capacitytexas.com/tj5000.html
It has a VE pumped 6BTAA5.9 and an Allison MD3060 behind it.
Engine is defueled to 153hp and the tranny is limited to the lower 3 gears(Rear axle has no suspension).
I must say, a sharp looking engine/tranny combo...

"The 2003 Dodge 2500's and 3500's will have the new body style and come with the optional Hemi Diesel paired up with the Allison 5 speed automatic transmission"

No, I didn't hear this myself, but someone did around the time I got my truck.

So, Ford has bought Cummins back. So the Super Dutys will come with a V8 Cummins that has aluminum heads and block, make 500 hp and 1000 ft/lbs of torque, and be mated to an Allison transmission. Maybe International will start making 1/2, 2/4 and 1 ton pick ups (not the CXT) again and put their engine in them. Does this mean that Dodge will get the Duramax?

If dodge doesnt renew the contract with cummins in 2007 they will get a mercedes diesel. Truck trend said something about either a 6.4L I-6 or 6.7L V-8. Lets just hope we keep the cummins, and keep it everything inline :P

I thought the Inline 6 Powerstroke IH was installed on GM vehicles, while the V8 Cummins with manual Allison 6 speed will be put into Frds.
Dodge gets the new Duramax/Mercedes triple turbo paired with a Chrysler 42RH transmission re-engineered by ZF for extra power.

That's what the salesrep told me yesterday when I asked.

Anyway joking aside, the combo Cummins/Allison is not new, Freightliner builds many vans and truck with them, it's a common doing. Fedex has a fleet of 55 series vans with new 185 ISB common rail and Allison 2400 transmission.
