98 Crank sensor on a 2001 engine?
98 Crank sensor on a 2001 engine?
I am planning to swap a 2001 engine into a 1999. My 99 has a crank sensor and tone ring on the crank, the 2001 does not. I am hoping to avoid having to swap cranks etc.
An experienced diesel mechanic that I know suggested using the 12v 1998 crank sensor which mounts beside the harmonic balancer. Both appear to be 2 wire sensors.
Does anyone have any experience with this combination or have any comments on this?

Both of those sensors should be 3 wires. The problem with using a 12 valve crank sensor is the dampener normally used only has two notches. The tone ring in the 99 has alot more notches, I don't remember how many exactly.
You could make an external tone ring like the 3rd gen trucks use or just change the crank. Which ever one seem like less work. If you change the crank remember to put some locktite on the little machine screws that hold the tone ring on, I had one come loose on me once.

common rail tone ring on late isb?
I would prefer not to have to swap cranks. Thats the biggest motivation in trying to find and alternate crank sensor option.
Does the common rail tone ring have the same number of teeth as the early isb's? do they both have missing teeth at the same position? will it fit behind my isb damper pulley?

As usual, i will post a question then go looking, i found a picture of a common rail tone ring on ebay, 58 teeth, and 2 teeth missing. From the haynes manual, the early isb tone ring is 35 toothed, with one tooth missing.
In the wiring diagrams in my haynes manual, it shows an "engine speed sensor" that is connected directly to the PCM. Is this the CKPS? It does not show it going thru the ECM at all, does this sound correct?
If so, then the CKPS has no affect on how the engine is timed? I have read some posts on a failed CPS not allowing the engine to start so it must be part of a shutdown control as well.
Any comments would be a help

u need the pcm and ecm from the 01, switching cranks is not the way to go. the alternate combos u suggest
r not going to work
the ckp on the 99 is used for the tach signal to the ecm and dash
