99 block to a 2001 block ? cam&crank sensor
99 block to a 2001 block ? cam&crank sensor
Ok here we go my 99 dodge had the 53 block we rebuilt a new motor but the new motor is a 2000 or 2001 block the only diff is it does not have a crank postion sensor the only one i have is the cam sensor .
I taped the crank sensor ( feed wire ) to the feed wire on the cam sensor and left the other 2 un hooked. from the cam sensor
now the prob is when i crank the truck the tack on the dash is working and the edge box tack is working but the truck sounds like its out of time or is realy sick lol . 5 to 8 sec later the tack on dash goes dead and truck runes fine . And the edge box tack is the only one that works . and i realy dont have any power boost dont kick up like it should .
any one have any ideas thanks nathan

yea that will work im looking for one i have one other idea that we can do is mount the crank sensor on the balancer and hook it back up .
That might be the ticket right there 12 vavles at least pre 94 had crank sensor on balancer.

There are problems with this all the way around, and this is why all the repair shops can't get away with simply swapping in a 01-02 motor into a 98-00 truck...
There is no tone ring on the 01 crankshaft, so simply installing a crank sensor on the block is not going to have anything to read.
The cam sensor is mounted in a different spot on the 01 timing case compared to the 98-00 cases. I've heard of one guy here having no trouble with that, but my buddies shop tried it and it didn't work. He ended up having to swap the 99 timing case onto the 01 block he used.
Simply using the 01 ECM might not work, because many 01 trucks have different features like electronically controlled cruise control where the 98-00 trucks have a vacuum actuated cruise control. And the 01 ECM is not going to have a crank sensor signal.
So to do it proper and right the first time, you need to:
swap the 99 crankshaft, and timing case onto the 01 block.

MikeR is right about the tone ring. The crank isn't machined on the 01, so you can't bolt the tone ring on. I never heard about the timing case being different though? I did this same swap.... 01 into a 99. I used a complete 01, wiring harness, injection pump, ECM , etc.... on the engine side and used the original PCM from the 99 on the firewall. The PCM sends the signal to the vac motor for the cruise, so it still works. This swap was a PITA at first, the truck wouldn't start, I had codes which I thought were wiring related, but it ended up being a bad cam sensor on the donor 01 engine. That's my 2 cnts.... good luck. Todd
I forgot to mention, the 01 doesn't physically have a crank pos sensor, but does generate a crank sensor signal that gets sent the the same pinout on the PCM, 01 and 99, which I believe keeps the tach working. I also spent days comparing schematics, and I'm almost positive you can't just get an 01 ECM and use it with the 99 wiring on the engine side, the ECM pinouts were not all the same. If you get an 01 harness and have the 99 fuel filter you'll have to splice the WIF sensor and fuel heater. It gets real tricky if you don't have schematics for both years.
