Make sure it has a Crank sensor,,, Somewhere in 2001 they stop using the crank sensor,,, For your 98.5 the ECM needs to see the crank sensor.
Do a search for this swap on this forum,, You will find a couple of us here are doing it Now ,,,, I start mine this Friday Noon Time,,,

Check my Gallery out for the repair for your #53 Block,,, Mine has not leaked for 10000 miles now..
Do a search for this ,.. 98 to 01 engine swap

The '01 will work, the tone ring, (crank sensor as called above post) has been done away with in the 01's. The same function is instead of the crank having a tone ring the sensor is now reading off the cam. That is all. Later Jim.

I just bought an 01 It has the crank sensor there ,, I dont know at what date they started doing away with them,, BUT I have been told the 98.5 ECM NEEDS to see that sensor..
I will let you know after this weekend,, Cause I am Installing my new 01

it will work,but you may have to change the entire front cover over,as the cam sensor location and connector may be different.Take a look,and see if they appear the same.The vp also has a different part number in 01,not sure if the connector is different or not.

I have a Good friend of mine that works in the parts dept at a Chry/Ply/dodge/jeep/ Dealership where I used to work as a Tech, I had him check all the sensor's and so far the Only one that has to be changed is the Map sensor....Cam and Crank sensors Are the same. I hope it all works,, I start doing it in 4Hours. And am Stranded ther until I get her running with the new CTD. I am SO ready To get that CRACKED #53 Block OUT,, And The New #56 Block In.
It is such a shame to Change The engine cause it runs SO good.

Update:::::
New engine Runs Great BUT sure is a FUEL HOG,, And at these prices thats a bad thing,,, I am thinking about putting my OLD cam in the New engine to see if that helps,,,,, The old Engine 20 -21 MPG,,
New Engine Just Sqeeking out 16.5 MPG..... Hopefully as I put miles on it it will get better (hahaaha),, Now Has 9 thousand miles on it.....

The only difference in engines is the cam and turbo exhaust housing,

If I understand you correctly, your "new" '01 engine only has 9000 miles on it? If that's the case, then I'm sure it's still pretty tight. I would expect the MPG to increase with more miles and the engines gets broke in/loosens up some.
