Is there a way to adjust it? Thank you in advance for your input.

no way to adjust it manual as the older 12 Valves could off the injection pump. 98.5 and up idle was controlled in a stock truck by the Computer. mine idles 850 ish. not sure if a Auto Vs Stick SO Vs HO would idle slightly diff. I may be missing something but this is my 2 dimes.

Good to know, thank you. Maybe with aftermarket programming idle can be adjusted?

Geez, I sure hope that an 850RPM idle is normal - mine has done it since day one when I got it 5ish years ago.

Cheers!

Check for bent throttle cable bracket at the APPS. Bracket may have been bent during injection pump or transfer pump replacement. Bracket may be bent enough to pull throttle cable slightly and increase APPS signal voltage above .5 volts. A slight adjustment of the throttle cable bracket will restore signal to correct output. Make sure the bell crank is against the idle stop.

I am 99.9% sure that idle speed is controlled by the VP44 (not the APPS) and 800 rpm seems right band on where it should be.

Sounds like 800-850 is normal, I guess I just thought that diesels had a lower idle. Thanks!

I would actually like to lower mine to about 700 - 750. I'd asked Marco if the Smarty could do this several years ago but never got a response. I think if it's at all possible on the 24 valves it would be done via software.

800-850 is normal for the 24 valve trucks. Lowering the RPM speed will not be a good idea for cold weather because piston speed during compression is what generates the heat needed for proper combustion. Slower idle would mean slower piston speed. Plus the ISB produces around 300 ft pounds of torque at idle.

Attaboy KATOOM - I knew that you would show up and make me feel better! Momma and I are wintering in the "real" SOCAL (Earp) and the Beast loves to idle around the campground pulling stumps and whatever else is in the way. There are 7, yes 7, 2nd Gens here at the Big River camp ground right now - my kinda heaven.

Cheers!

300 ft-lbs at idle RPM not at idle throttle. At full throttle and at idle rpm it produces 300 ft-lbs.

300 ft lbs at idle is correct. How many vehicles can you simple let the clutch out from a stand still while towing trailer weight in the teen's or heavier.....and never have to touch the throttle? Yeah, its 300 ft lbs at idle. Its even been claimed that this engine is almost impossible to stall. I've even heard of guys running through all the gears without touching the throttle. Not to many vehicles can achieve something like that.

Since we're gushing about torque, I've started my rig moving on flat ground in 5th gear (unloaded, just for funsies). The cummins just shoulders down and gets on with it. That said, I did have to put it in 4lo to idle up an icy, probably 10%+ grade with a huge load of green willow logs and brush in a trailer.. That was mostly for peace of mind. Don't like breaking things.
