Question 6 Speed

Could anyone tell me what the difference is between the NV5600 and the T-56 transmission? My reverse is over to the right and up.
Thanks
George

That's where reverse is on my NV5600. Don't know if that's conclusive or not, though, I haven't looked at any of the newer ones that I know have the G56 to know where reverse is.

6 speed

The reverse shift pattern is different on the two transmissions.
NV5600 Reverse is toward passenger side and up.
G56 Reverse is toward driver and down.
The gear ratios are about the same, G56 1st is a bit stronger, and 6th is .79.
If I remember correctly, NV5600 6th is .73.
The G56 has an aluminum case while the NV5600 has an iron case.
Hope this helps!

Here are some 5 and 6 speed ratios I have on hand:

NV5600 5.63/3.38/2.04/1.39/1.00/0.73/5.63R (27% OD) 360 lbs
NV4500 5.61/3.04/1.67/1.00 /0.75/5.61R (25% OD) as used by Chrysler, GM: '95up 195 lbs
NV4500 6.34/3.44/1.71/1.00/ /0.73/ (27% OD) as used by GM '92-94
280VO 5.98/3.50/1.86/1.00/ /0.80/5.04R (20% OD) Clark (I have one of these trannies in my garage looking for a home) about 220 lbs.
ZF6 5.79/3.31/2.10/1.31/1.00/0.72/ '99 up FORD DIESEL
ZF5 5.72/2.94/1.61/1.00/0.76/ Ford-German '88- all synchro Dodge:'89-93

I found the ratios for the G-56, 6 speed:
6.29/3.48/2.10/1.38/1.00/0.79/5.74R, compared to the NV5600:
5.63/3.38/2.04/1.39/1.00/0.73/

The low gear is lower on the G-56, but the O.D. is only 19%, so closer to 5th gear. To me this would dictate 3.54 ratios (depending on a lot of other things) to keep the revs not-so-high. However, it looks like 3.73 are now the RG&P of choice for DC. If that's the case, larger diameter tires might be the ticket. I'm used to using 1st gear when pulling a big load on the street with the NV5600, and 2nd gear starts, when empty. It looks like the G-56 1st gear would almost be too low for street starts. Stump pulling and creeping only. Not so good for clutch wear.
I would rather have the lower 1st, as I spend a lot of time on bad roads.
The G-56 is an aluminum two piece box trannie, with built-in BH.
