Hey Tazman,

I am going to have my 53 repaired next week. I thought about doing the Locknstitch myself, but found a guy within 2 hours of my home that has tons of experience doing it. For few hundred bucks it would keep my frustration level in check. God knows that it has been rough since my block cracked. This guy just repaired a guys JD tractor that had foot long crack because it was left out with the improper mix of coolant. He claims that it is stronger after the repair then it was new. I am going to take my chances. Seems like a less expensive route to go. A far cry from block replacement. I will try to let you guys know how it went. I do not know if the guy will do it, but I thought I would ask him to take pictures of the process so we can post it. He may want to keep the secrets to himself. The question is...will it just crack somewhere else now? I still am trying to decide weather I should keep it, or get rid of it after the repair.

yet another one....I dont know how DC/Cummins can say this is a "rare" problem....after all only a VERY small portion of Cummins owners ever hit the internet....

blh1960,

Appreciate the info and positive approach. Please keep us up to date with your experiences/info.

My guess is cracking might occur elsewhere unless additional material is added to the parent.

It’s an unfortunate situation. Glad some folks remain optimistic and are applying smarts towards a solution.

“yet another one” and I told you so is wearing a bit thin…….

Just my opinion

Locknstitch says the this is the stress relief for the block. Once holes are drill on each end it probably will not spread. It is a least worth a shot! I am normally not a gambler, but I am going to roll the dice on this one. I am also trying to get Cummins to help out on this one. They have communicated with Locknstitch about this. They have yet to get back with me.

Really, If YOU were "that" smart maybe you would have did some research and wouldnt have bought a #53....just MY opinion...

The fact is, Cummins/DC should be to at least offer a fix instead of burying their heads in the sand and denying the problem exists.

well i had a 11 inch crack in my block and i took it out and got it braised.. and drove it for a day before it started leaking again. so, i wouldnt recomend braising the crack. i dont know about stiching the block, a guy said he would do it for $2300, but i could get a new block for that price.

Read on dieselram.com where blh1960 got the lockandstitch done and it has not cracked again. The job was done with the motor it the truck. I believe everything was done for under $700 but you might want to pm him to get more info.
