My question is: It seems like the molds must have been changed for there to be "53" on two different sides of the engine. Is there any chance that the problem is only with the "53" of the drivers side?
Darn good question. I have never heard it specified if anyone with a 53 on the right has ever had a crack. I'll have to keep an eye out for info on that.

From all I've read, the 53 is all by itself, not part of a longer string of numbers.

Also, it has always been big bold 53 on the drivers side.

As Stamey said, worth researching.

Dude, what kind of Cummins do you have with a starter on the RIGHT side? You must REALLY be special.
Did you mean alternator?

So basically you can get a 53 block from any truck assembly plant. Its just luck of the draw with what you got, or unluck.
The engines are asembled at the Indiana Cummins Midrange Engine Plant (CMEP).

Stamey,

You beat me to the post.

Spent about an hour on this site http://www.locknstitch.com/

Some good info and best of all, it's a repair that I wouldn't be afraid to take on myself.

And we really appreciate your efforts. *I* wouldn't have gone out to lay in a puddle to look under the truck.

You know that saying, if we didn't like ya we wouldn't have said anything....
