Check your spelling and is it 5th that is popping out. Generally 5th gear can be serviced in the vehicle. Possiblly the nut on 5th gear.

I don't think this would be caused by bad synchro's.

If you are losing your 5th gear nut it may be a symptom.

Let this soak overnight and see if some of the trans knowledgable guys chime in.

This isn't a problem with the syncros. Just asking but, do you ever have a habit of shifting without the clutch? because it sounds like the fork is worn and possibly the cogs. You really need to talk to a transmission shop who is proficient with the NV4500. Here's a couple that may or may not be near you but they seem to have great information. http://quad4x4.com/NV4500_Transmission_Kits.html and http://standardtransmission.com/

I am not real familiar with the Dodge tranny's but that is usually indicative of a bent shift fork. A lot of the time it is from launching in first and trying to speed shift to second, it doesn't go easily so people pull harder hence the bent fork.

I'll give you my two cents,
To me it sounds like some or all of your synchronizer struts for that synchronizer are wore or broke. Baisicly there like dual action detents, detents that hold the synchro hub in place. (see pic.) There about 10-15$ for a set.
Since you can get it in gear, I assume with no grinding or other problems, that would say synchro's and forks are ok.
Bad news is the whole thing needs to come apart to replace them.
you can pick up kits cheap, but you get what you pay for....
Quad4x4 has a great selection of top of the line parts and manuals and good online pictures of parts. Hope I helped
