4x4 transmission problems ???

Hi Guys,

Have a weird problem happen today when backing my truck into the workshop. I backed it in using 4x4 (still ice and mud here) and after I had it parked, put the transfer case lever into 2 wheel drive position - but the lever moved further than normal. I got out and looked and wanted to move it back another couple of feet. When I tried to move there was no connecrtion to the transmission and the lever for the transfer case would not move either way.

It seems that the linkage has somehow become either disconnected, or has fallen out of adjustment. The truck has not been used since November last and I was just moving it around to do some maintenance (oil, filter etc) before using it again. Soooooooooooo, now I have a bit more than maintenance to do.

Anyone have an idea what I have had happen ???? Any tips before I crawl underneath to see what has happened/ what I can do to fix it?

I got so ticked off I just left the truck so I could cool down and try and figure out what has happened.

If anyone has some advice, please feel free to share it - I think I am stumped on this one at the moment.

Thanks

mariner

Sounds like the t-case went into neutral. I'd say put the tranny in neutral while engine is off, and try and put the t-case back in gear. Worse come to worst, drop the rear driveshaft and give it a bit of a turn and try it again.

Agree! T-case does not always like to come out of neutral when engine is running.
Engine off..... tranny in neutral.... try moving the transfer case through 2x4 and 4x4.
Should feel it shift and should work.

Thanks guys, fo your replies.

This isn't quite what it seems - the transfer case shift lever went beyond the normal 2WD position, after being taken out of 4x4. I don't quite know how else to explain it.

Previously I have been able to feel some sort of resistance (very slight), as the gear(s) move and mesh. Now there is no feel back and the transmission ain't transmitting : It is almost like there should be some sort of arrangement (snap ring or similar) to control total movement (safety stop? )and that no longer exists. Hmmmmmmmmm!

I will be going down to the shop tomorrow and will try out suggestions, but am not hopefull as yet.

Any other ideas would be appreciated as I have never delved into the transfer case/auto tranny before - never had to. In fact my 1986 Ford F250 (owned since new) has never been a problem ever! I sure hope this is not an indicator of what to expect from my Dodge "pride and joy"

Ok you tranny guru's - what is happening and why - any ideas?????

Thanks for any and all help.

Your t-case shift goes from 4lo-N-2hi-4hi, front to rear. So if you went to far from 2hi, it would slip into neutral. I don't know how it could go too far without going into neutral.

OK you guys - I was wrong and you lot were right

I went down to the s hop this morning and checked and sure enough, it was exactly as you all said

I know what happened and cannot believe I did what I did !

My old Ford has the following transfer case gearing (front to back)
2H - 4H - N - 4L. This is the sequence I thought I had in the Dodge - don't ask me why (have had this F250 truck since 1986, some 24 years ).

When I checked the Doge out I found I had as already said (front to back)
4L - N - 2H - 4H ; which is the opposite to the F250.

So, yes I had it ar*e backwards and got confused about it - getting old sux!

Thanks for all your comments.

Cheers
