47re transmission engagement issues

Howdy. Hope someone can point me in the right direction with this problem I am having.

I have a fairly stock 98.5 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 24v dually with a 47re transmission. I had the GM upgrade done to the governor pressure solenoid about 10 months ago and things were good until a month ago when I started to get some issues with my torque converter lock up.

I ordered that solenoid and my buddy dropped the pan and valve body, installed the solenoid with new wiring harness and put it back together. Fired it up and drove down the road to test it out. It didn’t make it far before the transmission overheated.

I could start the truck up and it would take off but within a minute it would lose all gumption and would not move in any gear. I would turn off the truck, turn the ignition and it would go for about a minute and lose all power.

Limped it back home and scratched our heads. He has now changed out the external plug (with a repair kit), two transmission filters, all new solenoids again, tried another valve body, everything back the way it was before changing the solenoid, and nothing is working. Even with all wheels off the ground, you can fire it up, put it in gear and hit the pedal and it spins. But as soon as you shift gears or stop after a minute there is no engagement of any gear.

The transmission fluid got burned (Mopar ATF4) from the initial test drive, no metal shavings in pan or on magnet, bands are tight, parking rod is set, and he says the shift linkage is good.

I can’t keep throwing money at this truck and I need it for work. Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Did you get a trans temp light?

If it started out sluggish it could be your TC stator clutch being defective.

After a trans temp light the internal seals are usually shot. Sounds like rebuild time to me.

Getting the various line pressure can also help figure out what is broken as well:

it is not acting sluggish. When you fire it up it will work in all gears but it's almost as if once it warms up it loses pressure for everything. No gears at all. But if you shut it back off and turn it back on you can get any gear back but it only lasts for a few minutes.

That's strange.

I second @jrs_dodge_diesel 's suggestion, but in my experience the trans temp light shows you a severe over temp situation in the trans that has already cooked some seals.

Maybe lend a pressure gauge kit and provoke the problem, compare the line pressure readings with the FSM and the governor pressure with a readout from a scan tool. This should give some good info on what's actually happening.
