47RE having trouble hunting for gears

Hey guys, need some assistance here.
After having 2 dealers and 2 tranny shops looking and working on my tranny, still having issues. The upgrades are as follows:
400 HP torque converter & a pressure lock

Went to shop with this issue:
Having trouble hunting for 4th gear.

A local shop found the band for 2nd wore out and replaced it. they also replaced the 2 solonoids. I think they were the lockup and 4th gear.
They took me out several times for a test drive and now, it hunts for 2nd and 4th. We hooked up a scan tool while driving it and it seems like the ECM is getting irratic readings back from the govenor data return.

My thoughts are either that wire is bad, or, the ECM needs replaced? Dealer said it has all the recent updates and they thought the solonoids would of fixed it. Not so! I'm really hoping it's not the ECM!

HELP

It is very hard to believe that a dealer, (and a reputable trans shop), do not yet know these trucks.

Leave the pan on the tranny, go clean the battery posts, order a electrical filter from DTT and I bet it all is ok.

Yup. Erratic electrical signals can send the trans into a frenzy. Mine did it, too. I cleaned the battery terminals and wrapped the tan and black wire running from the alternator to the battery in several layers of thick tin foil, then wrapped that in electrical tape. It hasn't hunted since. If nothing else, it could be the cheapest fix possible for you. Try it and see.

Also have batteries tested. Weak batteries will cause your problem.

I have heard of wrappin the hot wire from the alternator to battery.
Looks like a pain. I'll order the filter and clean the battery terminals.
Thanks

Bad news.
Installed a filter from DTT, cleaned battery terminals, and had batterys load tested. Still have the issue.
Dealer is saying it's probably the PCM

Did you do a APPS reset to see if that cures it, at least temporary fix ?

Trust us, you are not the only person this is happening to!
I have to clean my terminal every 3 months.
I also went to radio shack and purchased an electrical filter which helped.
I have been told many things that we can do to mitigate the shifting problem but these two have fixed almost all of my hunting problems.

Another thing most dont think about are the wire connections to and from the battery, alternator and tranny. Just one loose wire that has anything to do with the transfer of electricity to and from the tranny will cause the hunting.

Good luck and keep us posted. . .

Nope. You are not the only one. Im going home today and wrapping wires, installing filters, cleaning posts and adusting the APPS. One of those is BOUND to fix it...lol

Thanks to all for the good info!

I had the same issues with hunting for 2nd gear. Put in a governor pressure solenoid, electrical filter and checked all my grounds. Local shop said the filter, checking all ground connections, and clean battery terminals are usually the problem. Check your grounds while your at it. Fixed my problems.

WOO HOO!

OK its only the first day but I did the foowing:
  • cleaned and tightened battery posts
  • foil and tape on the Alternator wire
  • ran a ground directly from the battery to the PCM and tied that to the body
  • cleaned and reconnected all engine bay grounds (6 points mentioned in the sticky)
  • adjusted the APPS (spitball adjust, I just moved it clockwise as far as it would go)
  • This cleared my code: (Throttle/Pedal Position sensor circuit A low input)
  • my transmission lo longer "hunts" for 4th and 5th gear.
  • Also it seems to run better...lol might be just because Im so glad its running

So for now its all good and I dont have to buy a APPS...

Thanks to all that have posted on this here and elsewhere.

Found my alternator was over charging. Also, had to totally rebuild the tranny. Clutches were burned. All codes cleared. Only one issue left - Tranny won't go into lockup - just goes to limp mode once it hits 4th - weird
