Re:47 RE automatic trans
Adjust your transmission control valve cable (throttle valve cable) to the proper specifications. What is likely happening is the hot fluid is expanding the valve body and causing excessive clearances (most are marginal to begin with, and a little wear makes adjustment critical), and a little misadjustment will cause the body to leak too badly to engage the first/reverse band servo.
The other thing to do is make sure your low-reverse band is properly torqued to 72-74 INCH pounds, and then backed off 2-2.5 turns. Torque the locknut to 35 foot lbs to hold everything. You have to pull the transmission pan to reach the band adjustment.

tranny issue
im having similar problem but my truck never has problems going to reverse it will go backwards all day long but i know twice it had failed to engage when shifted into drive am i having the same issue with the band adjustment or a different issue
Does your problem change with the temperature of the fluid?
I'd suggest that you check tranny fluid level first (make sure you check both sides of the dipstick!*) in neutral, engine idling at operating temperature.
Then look at the fluid and sniff- does it smell burnt? What color?
Come back with the results and let's go from there.

* - sometimes the upper side of the dipstick shows fluid up to max, but the reverse side stays almost dry. The upper side just scrapes some splashes of oil from the tube.
