Because of your "no shop or tools" comment, I would buy as low a mileage 2002, 24v I could. Might find one still under 100,000 and still waranteed! Got mine in 2003 @ $26,000 (19,000 miles). Just had to go online and be willing to search out to 500 miles... and wait 3 months to find a buy; found it in a larger city dealership where the CTD is less easy to sell.

IMO there is a lot to be said for not going back 2 models in any vehicle, unless your a mechanic. The 2002 is the best of the 2nd gen CTD's (2001.5 is pretty much identical) and for your towing...a 5 or 6 speed would be better. For me...4 wheel disk brakes would be essential in your situation...won't get those in a 12v.
