24v Block ?

I am looking to buy my first diesel truck, and I found a guy selling a 2000 2500 Cummins. I have read about these truck possibly having the faulty #53 blocks, so I asked the guy if he could read the block #. He said he found a # and it looked like 38. Can someone varify this #? I am trying to buy a problem free truck, and this would really help me out.

Thanks,

Chris

It should be stamped in a couple of places on the engine, mine was on the front pass. side below the oil filter and again below the injector pump on the driver side . There is some good reading here

I saw that when I was looking around. If it is not a #53 block, what would be stamped on it? I am really crossing my fingers on this one.

The 53 is quite big...close to an inch tall. It is hard to miss ans FYI, my block has the 53 on both sides. If you dont see the big 53 - buy it (after of course, having it scanned by a dealer and measuring the fuel pressure after the fuel filter).

BTW, Chris...there is no such thing as a "problem free" truck - theyve all got their problems and need regular maintenance - especially the 24V's. I hope youve been doing some research on the lift pump / injector pump issues.

Good Luck.

I have been researching like crazy. The guy just replaced the lift pump, injector pump, and starter . I talked to him on the phone tonight and asked him if he could take a look under there and find a #. He said the only thing he could see were some small #'s that looked like 38 or 380??? I figured at least I could go look at it and check for myself. I was just curious what other block #'s there could be so I could varify something.

Mine doesn't have any big numbers, just a string of little ones.

Can't remember what they are, but none of the main block numbers Evil mentioned.

a dealer can check the pressure by using a scanner? instead of running a guage after the filter with somebody else's truck?

Say what?

Discussion is about different block castings.

To answer your question, you need a fuel pressure guage to check fue pressure. A scanner wont do it.

If you have large 5x series block, you have the Brazilian TUPY block. It's more common (about 8:1)

If you have just a series of smaller numbers, you have the Mexican Teksid block, which is MUY BUENO! It's a little harder and rumored to best of all ISB blocks.
