2002 several problems, help me diagnose

I am fairly sure it is the Vp, but figure i would share. While cold, some mornings it misses and blows white smoke for a while, sometimes i get dead pedal where i cant get above 30mph, usually it runs just fine when it is warmed up. It does NOT miss and sputter most mornings. also, does not have any smoke to speak of on startup when cold when it doesn't miss. My codes are 0500 (unrelated it guess), and 0216. on the 0216 code, have put over 100k miles on one with that code, so i am not sold on that alone. Have done apps reset. Have BD pump, i have pressure. So given all this, can anyone give me a real educated guess? I am up in alaska, so i am pretty much by myself on this as far as repair so i gotta be darn sure of what is wrong. thanks for any help!!!

Pretty much guaranteed to be the VP44. I drove the truck for over three months with the 0216 before I decided it was time to get it changed before I ended up stranded somewhere....
I am assuming you have a fuel pressure gauge?

i had a guage but took it off a while ago due to a leak, but it read good pressure, i do hear it run and it is a quality pump. Even if i didn;t have pressure, they symptoms still show vp correct?

Everything points to the VP44. It could be an electrical issue (somewhat unlikely, but possible). You could always try cleaning the contacts on the connector to the pump; it certainly wouldn't hurt anything. And as always, check your grounds!

vp time, the white smoke is from the timing not advancing. At least keep a spare for when your stranded. I ignored mine for some time too it left me on the side of the road, and my vp's rotor seized semi shearing the keyway to the gear, had to torch it off, major pita. I kept the old gear as a reminder if i ever get dead pedal again too change the vp asap.

here is some good reading on the VP. I found it helpful when mine was on it's way to the crapper.
