2001 HO Confusion

Hey guys, I've found a 2001 Cab and Chassis with a goosneck bed already on it, the seller is about 250 miles away but it's at a fair enough price to drive that far away if it's as good of a truck as he claims. Now the problem is he claims it's a High Output with the 6 spd but I checked the vin number and according to it, it is just the reg 24 valve. Does anyone know if maybe these vin decoders may be wrong or is he bluffing. And also can ya'll think of anything specific I need to get him to take a picture of or describe before I make the 250 mile drive to test drive/purchase this truck? Thanks Guys!

To my knowledge, if it has a 6spd it is a HO unless it was swapped or upgraded to a 6spd.

That is correct. For 2001 and 2002 trucks all 6-speeds from the factory also came with the HO motor. Unless the 6-speed was swapped in aftermarket, then the truck is a HO.

You can check the engine data plate on the left side on timing cover this also has engine serial number on it.. If a H.O. should have 245hp and 505 torque(i think) unless that was swapped also.

Does the VIN have a 6 or a 7 in the 8th digit, I know the 7 is for H.O. and 6 is for S.O.

I believe that is for only the 2001 model year...which does apply to willd's question.

My truck is an '02 and the 8th digit is a C which is the HO and 6 is the SO.

They must have changed the 7 to a C when the '02's came around.

just add a TST box and forget about whether it's a H.O. or S.O.

6 speed on a 01-02 is a HO, but if you're looking at trucks buy the one with the setup you want- transmission, capacity, condition,.. more than the 10 hp in the HO vs SO. The six speed has shorter lower gears than the 5 speeds which makes it ideal for towers but makes for busy shifting in daily driving.

Ask about the lift pump and the injector pump and if they're OE or what warrenty work has been done. Turn the key 3 times then leave in the on position w/o starting in order for codes to display on the odometer. If possible check fuel pressure- or have him check it before you go.

I bought a truck and had to turn around and buy an injector pump and lift pump 6 months later =\
